Do not scold me about Joe Biden. Go talk to him. He is the president of the United States and I work at the store.

A lovely Appalachian leftist on TikTok said that folks always talk about what radicalized them in terms of theory, struggle, or rage. But, he says, what about the soft things that radicalized us, too? Grammas that kept us fed, bees, flowers, friends being happy when they could make ends meet?

honestly the thing I find really gutting is the combination of the concepts "everyone in publishing has known that Gaiman was a weird creep for decades" with "Neil Gaiman has written essays and introductions for like every major genre reprint and anthology of the last twenty years"

Drawing from the Criterion Channel's list of Synth Soundtracks our June Patreon bonus in on John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. It's a movie you shouldn't think too deeply about the politics of, which we of course do. It's who we are!

No shame in feeling scared, overwhelmed and not knowing what to do. To me feeling one's feelings doesn't preclude taking action. These are confusing times. Give yourself some grace.

Beyond his obvious problems, Biden is the worst possible person to be President in this historical moment. He doesn't speak about Supreme Court corruption because he's a supposed "institutionalist," he convened a "commission" which came to nothing, he has absolutely no fire to rally the country, etc

This week we kick off a boxset of David Lean directing the works of Noel Coward with In Which We Serve (1942), a nicely shot piece of pro-war propaganda that quite a few scenes that should be anti-war propaganda.

There are two doors: one leads to certain death. One guard can speak but not think; the other can think but not speak. One of them gets to be president.

Question the legitimacy of this fundamentalist religion and you're condemned. But worse, members of that religion, drivers in their simulations, don't see those of alternative religions as fully human, just part of a simulation.

Synthesizing Adorno and Baudrillard, we can see "stroads" (roads built like highways but still containing "the vermin of the street") as an arena of religious conflict, where drivers in their mass simulation are constantly at war other religions - "pedestrians, children, and cyclists."

He even names road signs as a form of liturgy, particularly "RIGHT LANE MUST EXIT" as a commandment to be mindlessly followed. Being part of this collective consciousness by its nature eliminates interpersonal contact, but also personal responsibility. You're just keeping up with traffic, after all.

"The vehicle thus becomes a bubble, the dashboard a console, and the landscape all around unfolds as a television screen." But in Amerique (1984) Baudrillard also describes driving on American highways as a sort of symbiotic collective consciousness, that driving on them is a religious experience.

Baudrillard disagrees with the idea of the driver as "demiurge drunk with power" (The Ecstasy of Communication), but does so by describing driving as "the transformation of [the driver] into a driving computer" who can only see the outside world as simulation.

In Minima Moralia (1951), Adorno speaks of some tech advancements encouraging Fascistic behavior inherently through use. To wit, the car: "which driver is not tempted, merely by the power of his engine, to wipe out the vermin of the street, pedestrians, children, and cyclists?"

I think it's worth remembering that the purpose of this current "AI" boom is about disciplining labor. It doesn't have to be good or capable because that doesn't matter. The people pushing it just need to be able to point at it and say "don't get uppity or we'll give your job to the machine."
