There is no justifying felons being disenfranchised if it’s also okay for felons to run for president.

I mean, worth noting that DC is one of just three places in the country where felon voting rights are fully unrestricted. Too bad Trump's a resident of New York, lol. Gotta complete any prison sentence before he can vote for himself!

You are absolutely correct. But trumplicans will never, ever abandon the fear inducing & base incensing issue of CRIME CONTROL. This despite every congressional report, academic study and most every CJS alumni attesting to the fact that rehabilitation & reintegration works. They don’t care.

It's so idiots like Trump don't imprison their political enemies to eliminate them from running. He can run, but how effective is he going to be being president from prison? If he survives in prison to the election. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe the rampant covid in prisons will sort this one out.

Somehow being eligible to vote in the election seems like a good basis for being eligible to stand (except in cases of restricted electorates like Deanery Synod reps electing to Diocesan and General Synod in the CofE, but anyone on electoral roll in a CofE church can stand)

In the contrary, there is a very good justification, Saeed. Felons being disenfranchised means that it is easier for one team to win elections. Felons running as president is also viewed as necessary for that same team to win elections.

The one type of crime I support removing voting rights for is crimes to influence election outcomes. For example, when Jeb Bush & Katherine Harris illegally removed people from the voting rolls they should have been prosecuted and lost their voting rights.

Right, there is a sleight of hand going on in public morals convo. convicted felons should indeed have the right to vote, just maybe not the right to control the executive branch of the government straight away 🤔

Running from prison has been ok, and not just for Sinn Fein. Eugene Debs, imprisoned for illegally preaching Socialism. Lyndon LaRouche, imprisoned for scamming his donors, which is much closer to Trump's case. And NY would let Felon Trump vote if he's not in prison, so FL will too.

It’s on a state by state basis. Florida has laws against felons voting, but I’m sure DeSantis will give Trump some sort of dispensation.

No need to drone on with “Nobody is above the law” platitude BS. It’s also an insult to the American people to claim that this “justice system” is “what makes our democracy.” They could populate a small country with the number of prisoners we have here, & as long as T doesn’t join their ranks, STFU.

Especially when disenfranchised felons weren’t even doing time for violent crimes. Whereas Trump has killed at least a million people, from Covid, domestic violence from instigations from his toxic trap (mouth), our allies in Afghanistan and Iraq, & probably more.

I totally agree!!! The disenfranchisement of felons combined with race based policing is a post civil war attempt to disenfranchise Af. American voters (by %). It's a scandal & should end like the civil war statues. Canada does not disenfranchise felons (also has lower incarceration rate).

It should honestly be switched - felons should always be able to vote, but they shouldn't be allowed to run for president, at least not until after they've served their time or had the conviction overturned :p
