Prosecutors in Virginia routinely pressure defendants to give up their constitutional protections against unreasonable search for years. This “encourages bad policing,” one defense attorney told Bolts, since they have “free rein to do whatever they want” with no consequences.

Dems need to immediately put their weight behind a federal Anti-SLAPP statute. A real one. With expedited hearings and automatic fee shifting.

DSA is a separate topic about content that is separate from the GDPR. No one in this thread advocated for DSA in this country, as it suffers from the Hungary issue of it being potentially abused by its worst member states.

That is a nothingburger of a sentence. Existing laws regulating data privacy in healthcare and financial industries have been upheld in court without violating 1A. Unless you're in favor of repealing HIPAA, you should not be opposed to a data privacy bill.

Where do you think the money made from ad revenues go to or money from sponsorships is pulled from? They have bank accounts, assets, and employees that are within US jurisdiction or treaties. And Europe is doing just fine enforcing data privacy laws on TikTok.

And the answer is a data privacy bill consistently yelled by actual privacy experts as Himes alluded to. When folks like @evacide.bsky.social who literally removes stalkerware from domestic violence victims calls a ban a sham, that is a good sign to go back to the drawing board.

New at The Watch: Trump wants to deport more people than the populations of NYC, Chicago, and L.A. combined. It would cost $1 trillion+, and require a force larger than the U.S. Army. It also can't be done. But that isn't the point. It's about giving his supporters the human suffering they crave.

Deporting US citizens isn’t a theoretical concern either, there have been cases of it happening. Any kind of mass ramping up would inevitably sweep up more.

It’s true that Israel has lately been a lot less cagey about their “alleged” nuclear weapons than they have been, including elected officials suggesting they be used on Gaza. Again, this is a rather relevant factor if you’re discussing why the rest of the world is approaching Israel the way it is.

Following @mmasnick.bsky.social and the threads he replies to has made me realize that Americans treat the constitution the way religious people treat the bible. The parts they like they insist on a dogmatic literal interpretation and the parts the don’t like they just ignore existing.

We could do this with the anti-Vietnam War protests as well. They were profoundly unpopular at the time. Now we look back at those “annoying kids” and wonder why more politicians weren’t listening to them.

Today we look back positively on the lunch counter sit ins of 1960-1, as products of a movement that understood how to protest “the right way.” The overwhelming majority of Americans in 1961, however, disagreed. Their contemporaries thought those disruptive students were doing it all wrong.

Every decade or so we go through the college protest story all over again with the same results.... John Pike, the cop seen in the viral photo from UC Davis, was never charged. He either resigned or got fired, then got over $38,000 from worker's comp for "psychiatric" damage from his own actions.

There‘a no decade in the past 80 years when peace protesters in the US haven’t been illegally spied on, infiltrated, rounded up, beaten and jailed on pretextual charges. The perception of some gap between between the era of cointelpro & the post-9/11 surveillance state is a mirage.
