I'm hoping we don't have the earth-salting anti-southern problem here on Bluesky like we did at the other place but I'm glad this post is here as a sign for me to tap

I love antineoconfederate Sherman memes, but moved to my SC hometown from comfy-Blue CO. Worried about MAGAchuds. Then wore a shirt saying "Peace Love Logic" and a guy in the checkout line said, "I don't say it to avoid a fight but more people here should be that way." The cashier said "heck yeah"

If anything, I am upset by the policies and the politicians; I try to not assume that the population is unified behind them. "Florida Man" style stories are highly visibile, and sadly get generalized across the populace of the states.

Those of us in secure blue states need to find a friend in a red state and write postcards etc for
the senate races there. I wrote 500 postcards to Georgia last time (therapy for my anxiety) and man if I got just ONE person out to vote, it was worth it.

There's a fairly large contingent of southerners here. I'm hoping that'll increase.

As a NYer, this argument felt like a slap (in a good way) the first time I heard it. “The South ain't Red, folks. It's suppressed. Don't pray for the South to secede. Ride down here and help fight.”

There was the same exact idea posted about T exas, was it last week? Whenever it was the GOP was doing their usual Election year "we want to secede!" to get the fanatics to vote and the knee-jerk smug shit-talking about the state was happening.

Related point: I hate it when people say “they voted for it” for things like abortion bans. Even setting aside voter suppression, the whole point of civil rights is that there are rights that a single, simple majority election should not be able to strip away!

A corollary to this are the complaints that "blue states fund red states." While true, the way to "fix" that would be to slash programs that benefit the poor (which red states have more of) and slash taxes on the wealthy (who are disproportionately in blue states).

We kinda do. I've multiple times had to tell people their points of "you should just leave" to Southerners discussing our regional hardships aren't helpful. And that the issues we have here - prejudice and cowardice in leadership - are not unique to our region.

I try to explain Georgia is not red. It's gerrymandered thanks to upper-middle class conservatives in white flight suburbs.

I grew up in a rural part of a blue state, and many folks here have a legitimate beef with federal and state governments over the fact that dozens of towns have been left to slowly rot on the vine, and family farms have been allowed to just fold. Populists have a very easy starting place with them.

So far, the lack of engagement software, seems to limit the scope of organized bigotry on Bluesky – there is nothing to say "let's you and him fight." Hopefully this will continue to be the case as the platform expands.

Reading a single history book on antebellum South is eye opening. I am struggling thru Masterless Men, which is a brutal account of how systems of control worked to keep down white people and slaves both, which included the intentional spread of racism

The UK equivalent is the weirdos who post the "union of Celtic Republics" map which manages to imagine a seceding conglomerate of liberal people that misses out where most nonwhite people in the UK live.

I’ll tap the sign and suggest everyone read “the counterrevolution of slavery: politics and ideology in antebellum South Carolina” by @profmsinha.bsky.social South Carolina was so illiberal and their elections, dare I say rigged, from the start that you can see its similarities to todays politics!
