It’s a bit startling to see Clarissa and Peter as regarding each other as “elderly”, when from my perspective that is practically youthful. But would this have been a common assumption at that date, one is entering old age just past 50?

The fact that qualified, capable candidates with normal flaws are having trouble with a gold-plated tin pot dictator and convicted felon is not a reflection on the candidates; it is a reflection on the electorate. White people are outrageously racist. That’s it. A smidge less racism and we’d win.

Not weird, because it’s kind of sad how his life worked out. Maybe she was drawn to his unconventionality, as she was to Sally’s. Sounds like Clarissa grew up in a pretty stodgy home, and maybe those two offered the glimpse of new horizons.

I had measels when I was around 2-1/2 or 3 years old. I remember being in the bed in my darkened windows for what seemed like forever. For the next few years I got sick all the time - i got earaches so bad both my eardrums ruptured in separate episodes.
