Do you know what the 22 countries ranked ahead of the U.S. in happiness all have in common?
Universal healthcare.
Turns out people are happier when they don’t have to choose between food and seeing a doctor.
There are problems everywhere, but it's easier to deal with depression, when not living in a ditch while doing 3 jobs. It's actually pretty scary, when a huge country with so much power is so unhappy. It has global ramifications.
If it's any consolation, Britain has universal health care (under a 14-year attack from the Conservatives and now on its knees and being bought up by US healthcare companies) and we're miserable.
Thats not fair! The US is the ONLY first world country that lacks healthcare... You could use that stat for any number of humongous gaps we have between us and every other civilization on Earth!
And happier when they have access to free education, affordable housing, have walkable cities and efficient public transport, and generally live in an egalitarian society.
The US is behind in so many metrics. But then the ‘economy’ is doing great …
You also know what people like? Not going to a doctor's office or hospital knowing the staff and the patients are all going to ignore Covid precautions.
Democrats saw Medicare for all on the ballot, and rallied once again in the most undemocratic fashion to undermine it
Cant actually hand voters nice things when you can campaign on it instead!
Uncle Sam's Tourist Plantation has zero Universal Health Care, 5% of the world's population, emits 20% of the world's greenhouse gasses, incarcerates 25% of the world’s prisoners, has 50% of the world's nukes, is 99% owned by AIPAC lobbyists, and has the largest military budget in the world by far.
Every other developed country in the world has figured out universal health care—surely the USA, leader of the free world, can too.
And wait, as the leader of the free world, we should do better: include dental, vision, mental, gender-affirming.
How about a GI bill for health care providers?
What a surprise, I thought people liked constantly worrying about when their health insurance will run out and they'll have to sell shit to afford treatment or die a slow and painful death. /s
During the early 2020 pandemic, I got Medicaid for the first time.
I could just, pause for effect, GO TO THE DOCTOR!
Now I am back to watching every order and bill for mistakes and hoping to afford my medications.
It was so nice. The med staff hate our insurance system too.
Sure, they have universal healthcare. But none of them have the capability to just go where they damn well please, and screw up someone's life, completely and utterly, in a matter of minutes.
True but the Happiness Reports and the like are also all absolute nonsense. Scandinavian countries are always on top and our health care is a cruel joke. Preventive examinations? Basically non-existent. Have serious symptoms? "Take time and see how it develops". Trans Healthcare? Non-existent
My first guess would have e been gun control.
Or no regular mass shootings.
Or a leader not aiding a genocide
Or not an oligarchy.
Or more than 2 political parties.
What???? You mean being alive and human and having flesh is universal? Shocking 😂 Remember when republicans wanted us all to have skin in the game? What game?
I know. Isn’t it so strange.
So the prospect of being unwell is linked to being unhappy.
And the prospect of being unwell is linked to losing your employment.
And the prospect of being unwell is linked to weak employment rights.
All very screwed up and very predictable.
is it universal healthcare? or is it colonialism? how many of these other 22 countries are in the global south? my immediate guess without looking it up is 2 (two) and they are also full of white ppl who don't have to deal with being made uncomfortable by brown refugees.
Tellingly if you only looked at the data for ages 60+ the US would be 10th. I can't imagine what's different between ages 65 and below in the US
It's a mystery
Yet most people on the teevee (pols, pundits, journalists, and the like) will all still bellow out the trite, "the United States is the best country in the world!" and also refer to POTUS as "leader of the free world."
According to who?
Just us.
It’s okay! Soon you’ll be able to talk to an AI nurse, thanks to NVIDIA and Hippocratic AI!
Because, as we all know, AI never makes wildly incorrect claims about the world.
Something the U.S. will never understand because ooooooh! Isn’t that socialism? Ooooh! We are so freakin’ stupid here. Greatest country on the planet ever……Nah!
The GOP will spin this to say it’s Biden’s fault, not that we’re on the potential verge of an autocracy with a Congress and SCOTUS that ends the possibility of making life better for its citizenry.
turns out half the population of a country are also much much happier when they have the right to CHOOSE to not be pregnant and risk dozens of different health complications that range from "may or may not impact the rest of my life" to "will literally kill me."
Looked up the rankings and wasn't surprised by the Top 4 happiest nations, and then coming at No. 5...Israel?!?! In 2024. Really? I feel like they must have conducted this survey before October, right???
Universal healthcare doesn’t necessarily make everyone in country be happier. Countries like Japan (rank 51) have universal healthcare but ppl there are less happy than Americans, esp because of their stressful work environments and have ppl dying from overwork.
Also not having your physical health tied to your ability to work so you can actually be healthy when you do work, or not work if you aren't healthy enough to do so.
This is not to say, I don’t agree with gun control. I just think that it isn’t the only problem. Violence in the US is a problem in general, and mental health, I would argue, is part of that problem.
I have asked the hospital three times for a detailed itemized list of what I am being billed for and three times they have sent me a four line item summary of what I’m being billed for that somehow added up to $10k.
