For those who don't know: this is James Timpson of Timpson key cutters/shoe repairs/dry cleaners. His company employs ex-convicts and even runs work training programmes in prisons. Genuinely inspired choice.

Two things: 1) do the 1922 have to be completely separate from cabinet posts? I think you've implied that. 2) how funny would it be for Labour to "accidentally" have 122 cabinet posts just for the lols.

I briefly crapped it thinking it was Holly valance instead of sir Patrick vallance. It's weird how you get used to corruption and nepotism. Thank goodness, it's like a breath of fresh air.

Vallance as Science Minister as well as Timpson as Prisons & Probation Minister. Creating a government that wants to govern, rather than one that wants to rule.

Every summer, I reset my calendar to better manage an ever-increasing number of requests. Last year, eg, I set weekly maxes for online meetings for both pre-planned and last-minute requests, and 'zoom windows' to defragment my days and allow for concentrated work time. What's your best tip?

Arguably, we're in this mess because David Cameron, high on the success of half-arsing the AV referendum, decides to crush the leadership challenge from backbenchers and ukip externally, so holds the EU referendum and loses. But I'm sure they've learned lessons from all this 😬

Nature does not abhor a vacuum. 99.9999999999999999999958% of the Universe is empty. The rest is old boots and stars and tea stains and you. But atoms are also 99.9999999996% empty. Everything is mostly nothing really. Looking at it that way, it’s easy to justify eating an entire tub of ice cream.

He's got history of throwing people under the bus to get more votes. Scots, trans, etc. I'm not happy at being used as vote fodder, and have long memories for this sort of thing.

This will be doubly awkward as the number of NOMINATIONS required for a candidate to make the Tory Leadership ballot ISN'T a percentage. It's a fixed number. 100 MPs. I'm sure it sounded reasonable at the time. Good luck getting 100 Tory MPs to agree on something when there are only 121 of them.

That's genuinely hilarious. I'm sure they'll fix it this time around so it's much lower, say 30, and then not change it because why would they, and this lower number absolutely won't bite them in the ass later on.

I think he's being used as a stuffer candidate. They don't want any of the loose cannons in the lord's, so Greyling, as incompetent as he is, is now just a vote. A corner office candidate. Still angry, he's got no place in government with that limited skillset.

Worth remembering, for the next five years, that the Tory party rules ASSUME they'll have a large number of sitting MPs. e.g. to automatically start a leadership context only 15% of tory MPs have to put in letters. 15% of 130ish seats is... not a lot.

As a former civil servant who used to deal with these letters, absolutely. By and large, a letter from Dame Prudence Wheelbarrow MP about insert topic here gets a response drafted by the civil servant responsible, but a letter from Jane Citizen gets a form letter.
