Thank you! I rarely dip my toe into reporting on policy or legal doctrine, so this was an especially challenging piece too!

Most adults between 1957 and 1975 will need to decide whether to get a second dose of the measles vaccine in order to be fully protected. Link below is not paywalled

“Book bans and challenges ebb and flow. But it’s never been as pronounced as it is right now. It’s just relentless... The best thing we can do is to make sure our books are more diverse than ever. Even if this means we’re going to sell fewer copies of the book.”

The U.S. is in the midst of one of its largest measles outbreaks since the disease was declared eliminated from the country in 2000. Are you adequately protected if measles comes to your community? Here's how to find out.

It may not seem it but this article took 6+ months to report & edit because of its complexity & making sense of the controversies while being fair to all involved. Big thanks to editor Nick Tate for helping throughout & being a hell of a cheerleader when I needed it.

I learned *so* much about pelvic organ prolapse and about pelvic floor health while writing this article, and I may very well become an evangelist for pelvic floor health after writing it. Aimed at PCPs but with good info for everyone.

That’s specifically regarding his “support” of Israel. He can veto congressional votes for aid to Israel, though that can be overruled by a 2/3 majority. Meanwhile, with Columbia, I’m not sure what he can legally do except escalate w the National Guard—the opposite of helpful.

Please educate me. (That’s a serious request.) My understanding is that Biden is required to follow through on certain things by treaty which, if he doesn’t, can lead to impeachment. I’m not supporting what he’s doing. Am I wrong about that situation?

For those outside New York, Errol Louis is a local political reporter and pundit who is by no means anti-cop. It’s meaningful that he’s the one saying that NYPD can’t be trusted on this.

The book info isn't v surprising—yet it's mind-blowing w/ great details & explanations. The science can get heavy—several times I backed it up to re-listen—but it's broken down well. It's also NOT prescriptive or judgmental & it's v thoughtful, sensitive, and informed re weight and weight gain.

I'm actually only 1/3 into it, so maybe I'll feel differently later, but I doubt it. Ironically, I'm usually least likely to read/enjoy books on food, diet, etc. I actively avoid them, but I picked this up for a science book club & stayed up too late listening to it because it's THAT good.

I read nonfiction books VERY sparingly & recommend them even more sparingly. I read so much NF for work that I usually reserve pleasure reading for fiction, mostly fantasy/scifi/dystopian. But sometimes a NF book is SO good it hooks me & I rave about it. That's true of Ultra Processed People.

This mini-thread is a book recommendation, but it's also an articles recommendation and a "keep an eye on this area of science" recommendation. The book rec first: YOU NEED TO READ ULTRA PROCESSED PEOPLE by Chris Van Tulleken.

I missed an interview that led to missing a deadline—which I couldn’t tell my editor about (I lost WiFi too)—delaying my story 2 days, on top of other list work. But thanks AT&T, I could almost buy a coffee at Starbucks with your measly 5 bucks while I had no service for 9 hours.

My initial reaction to making the full interview available was conflicted. I realized, thanks to Ben’s comments & replies to him, that that’s bc these interviews are so often done poorly & therefore do legitimize someone. BUT, when done WELL & source is challenged, it’s journalism done right.

She nailed the interview and even the far-right is having trouble defending Chaya after this one. She comes across as not just cruel but vapid even to some of her own followers. It's a service to reveal this to those on the fence about taking her seriously. Please don't throw me into a volcano.

The question is more about cultural and economic barriers and issues, and whether it’s possible to persuade the political powers that be that these lives are worth saving. This is the country that declared a “war on drugs” in the 80s, and that mindset remains strongly ingrained here.

The second barrier, also huge, is that our law enforcement industry (and that’s exactly what it is) is far more punitive, violent, and reactive than those in Canada and Australia. The question isn’t whether these centers will save lives in the US. They will—and I don’t think anyone doubts that.

This particular site also includes inhalation use. The issue is complicated, as the story delves into a bit. The problem is that our healthcare system is completely different from the Canadian& Australian ones, which fund these sites in those countries. That’s the first barrier, and it’s a big one.

Nex had been bullied for over a year for their non-binary identity. It was in a school bathroom — in Oklahoma, where the governor signed an anti-trans bathroom bill into law — where a fight ended their life. The school never even called an ambulance.

Two years ago, we wrote in the Guardian: "The CDC is beholden to corporations and lost our trust." With today's news about the CDC weakening COVID isolation guidance, likely influenced by corporate interests, this statement continues to sadly hold true.

Yes, this brings the CDC guidelines for COVID into line with guidelines for RSV and influenza. It's not just that is COVID more severe. The guidelines for RSV and influenza are not right either. We need universal paid sick leave, not permission to return to work while still contagious.
