She nailed the interview and even the far-right is having trouble defending Chaya after this one. She comes across as not just cruel but vapid even to some of her own followers. It's a service to reveal this to those on the fence about taking her seriously. Please don't throw me into a volcano.
I don't get what it is about Taylor that makes people lose it like this. But people got so much anger about the shitty coverage of trans rights. But normies need to see how fucked up folks like chaya are. Taylor is making that very obvious in how she conducted the interview.
Yeah, I agree with this. I have a hard time with "Bad people will go away if you don't give them a platform" because A) no they won't and B) interviewing someone if you push and challenge them in a way that forces them to expose their own stultifying stupidity and hypocrisy isn't "platforming."
I despise Raichik.
But Lorenz acted like an amateur podcast host excited to chat with her guest. As an example, she prefaced one question with an almost gushing "I've always wanted to ask you..."
She capped off the interview like a friendly talk-show host: "So what else have you got going on?"
I recommend you watch it. Taylor does extremely well here, and Chaya comes off universally as petulant and strange. This is how you actually interview someone like this, who has twisted themself into a pretzel to defend a hate campaign that has consumed their entire life and identity.
She maybe tried to do good, but in the end did bad. Interviewing people who are being hurt, instead of the stochastic terrorist, seems a better way to do good with a national platform.
No volcano, but sadly, these kinds of interviews with these types of people are rare. It's just not a good idea for MSM to give these people another platform. Ever. Profile Nex's life instead.
I feel like the fact most of Taylor’s defenders being journalists while those decrying her platforming that disgusting fascist being members of the groups lott assaults should be telling.
Are they? Out of an abundance of fairness I went and took a quick perusal of their preferred ecosystem and they’ve already got clips from the interview they’re shopping around as Chaya having “owned” Lorenz. The only opposition from the right I’ve seen are the same antisemites who hated her already.
I think a lot of people overestimate how much people who aren't Extremely Online know about Chaya. Having her nonsense framed by Taylor is, I think, a useful way to show it to people who aren't so Online.
I think two things can be true.
Taylor made Chaya look like a complete buffoon.
Taylor shouldn’t have brought more attention to Chaya’s views and I am willing to wager Chaya only comes out with more of a following for it. Stupidity doesn’t stop hate.
I just saw the interview and it makes Chaya look bad. It's not converting anyone to her beliefs. Plus she has already been platformed by Fox News and Twitter, that ship has sailed.
The Liberals have arrived on BlueSky and as usual with their bumblefuck stupidity are bringing the fascists with them and making it unsafe for minorities... while claiming to be helping.
Fuckers gentrifying BlueSky - it's over.
"She comes across as not just cruel but vapid even to some of her own followers."
Really? How many of her followers have you polled on this?
It may be good in the long run to have this on record, but don't be so foolish as to believe ONE bigot is rethinking their position.
Hey do you have any evidence the right or Chayas followers are struggling with this interview? Be interesting to see that, although I don't want to wake through the muck to do so lmao
I understand this pov but similar things were said about any number of interviews with any number of far right doofuses, former presidents included, and it hasn't hurt them a bit. We keep stepping in this, in this exact same way.
“She nailed the interview”
No, no she did not
“The far-right is havin’ trouble defendin’ Chaya after this one”
The “Libs of Tick Tock tears apart Liberal journalist” videos prove that’s a lie
And Chaya has gained more supporters
Nobody ever tries to cancel Chotiner for interviewing the worst people - we mostly laugh at them like the first squad of Special Forces trying to figure out what's going on in an Alien movie
The far right is having trouble defending Raichik (why is everyone calling her by her first name like y'all are friends?) because she seems cruel and vapid? The people who celebrate Marjorie Taylor Greene? I don't believe you.
This individual is now an employee of the state of Oklahoma.
People have not only a right, but an *obligation*, to know what their elected and appointed public officials are doing, especially when what they're doing is promoting and inciting terrorism.
I respect you and your work (and Taylor's) but looking like a stammering asshole isn't going to lose her any tangible far-right support. She might even gain some if she plays the crybully victim card.
Just a really bad look, especially as her OK colleagues scramble to obfuscate Nex's murder.
2 things can be true at the same time:
1) There can be righteous anger for LOTT seemingly being further legitimized by any coverage
2) Non-online people who only know LOTT from posts/shares could see her answers and recoil, esp those in OK who find out she drives policy decisions.
She doesn’t come across that way—she is deeply cruel, vapid and mind-numbingly stupid.
All of which are assets in the world in which she operates, unfortunately.
The "you're giving her a platform" argument falls a little flat when she's already achieved influence over the Oklahoma school board. Sure, you can't just shrug your shoulders and promote them either, but this seemed like giving someone rope to hang themselves — as you said.
How do you not realize there's *so* many people who have been made look cruel and vapid and they don't lose ANY of their support for it. The certain crowd of people don't give a flying fuck about their leaders winning or losing debates. Like, c'mon, how is it not obvious at this point?
Platforming fascists is always a bad idea. Those "still on the fence" are spineless centrist who couldn't give a fuck about anyone but themselves, and they'll keep turning their coat whichever way the wind is blowing at the moment. Platform Chaya's victims instead, and lift up the voiceless.
Chaya already has a profile and a voice that is widely heard in uncritical environments.
The interview showed that Chaya is simply bad. It's necessary.
Not cancelling, but do we really need to give Raichik more ink? And allow the Owasso police to uncritically repeat their BS conclusions about Nex’s death?
But you assume the right’s stance is based on a rational approach to debate. It isn’t, and that’s why propagandists always accept these interviews. They’ll get one sound bite in and use it for months to discredit the interviewer and fan the flames. It doesn’t matter who actually “won.”
Idk, bud. Seems like most of the people who are saying this was a stupid, myopic decision are folks who have actual skin in the game.
Maybe listen to them???
Ah yes nothing like *checks notes* giving someone even more platform to stand on and yell hate out at everyone to make them... uh, less popular 🙄
It's frustrating how many supposed authorities don't even understand the most basic concepts of information warfare.
IDK, generally the way this goes is that those maniacs don't care at all as long as the hateful message is getting out. And they despise Lorenz; they'll all be talking about how Chaya totally owned her. 🤷♂️
After the 16th St Baptist Church bombing, do you interview Bull Connor or Martin Luther King? I can buy the case for “both,” but “Bull Connor” is the wrong answer.
“..having trouble defending..”
There’s no value to this. They don’t feel a need to defend their position, that’s word games to them. Looks vapid? Good. All the better because all the more clear about the, “Fuck you, that’s why” intention.
If Taylor's video interview gets Chaya fired from the OK govt. position she has and a federal hate crimes investigation launched against her then great, otherwise what is the point of it.
High fiving Taylor for how well she interviews a Nazi is not the justification you think it is.
No matter how cruel and vapid she comes across as - giving this person a platform validated their point of view as one worth engaging with.
This doesn’t hurt Chaya or her followers. It validates them.
Someone should sit down with the volcano for a bit, maybe film it, to show everyone how dangerous and uncool it is. Then the volcano fans have no choice but to distance themselves from the volcano.
She could have shown what a vile person Chaya is without allowing her to spout more of her bilge and then putting it in a legitimate newspaper. There's plenty of evidence of this online.
All this does is give legitimacy to a raging bigot and increase her influence. You should know better, Ben.
Dude if you’re gonna weigh in its to not expect people to disagree. Let’s try a boringly tactical angle: the fash has long, long exploited the mainstream press for airtime, and we know from numerous examples that the attention allows them to do more harm. Who is helped here? Many are harmed.
I think everyone is so used to fawning interviews designed to guarantee continued access that they don't think Isaac Chotiner style interviews can exist.
