So this is so fucked up. What the hell. I noticed Jovan was making headway and then suddenly disappeared from the media. Turns out that disappearance could be from coordinated…. racist jealousy from Labour — or, and both options are the worst option — the implication Labour wanted Farage to win

It's not quite done here but Labour went from twenty points plus ahead to a ten point lead in six weeks. And that Reform vote is a lot of that Tory vote. Look at those numbers and tell me this Labour majority is one that lasts another election.

It's not just because they "shout louder" - it's because they're backed by people who are rich and powerful and will platform them no matter what 🤷‍♀️

Always revealing of the internal contradictions and arrogance when big talkers who otherwise love to quote aphorisms about “no free lunch” and nature/public/etc having to “pay its way” make claims that “one plus one can equal three”

There is some absolutely fantastic and important writing in this edition of the Pacific Journalism Review.

Including incredibly necessary reflections on the way media have treated the genocide in Gaza.

The actual students involved are upset and believe it was inappropriate. The excuse-making completely ignores them. These useful idiots will never understand or acknowledge power and how it impacts social interactions (ofc if someone in Green Party did this, they would be snarking all over the tl).

It must be frustrating for writers at the Spinoff to produce profound pieces about how the government seeks to extract capital from everything, only to have their pieces appear beside Duncan Grieve's paens as to why David Seymour or Chris Bishop might secretly be the cleverest person in the room

Is Amanda Luxon The Prime Minister's *minder*? Can't remember seeing a PM's spouse so consistently at the table in delegations & political meetings. Raises questions about protocols should she be privy to sensitive information. Seems like a move toward US style family integration with politics.

I wonder how The Herald's senior reporters and editors would feel about a dose of the same treatment they've given to David Bain and his family? That's a rhetorical question - as it takes zero imagination to picture the loud and litigious shit storm THAT would trigger.

Meanwhile the Speaker is pressing for more money for Parliamentary security. So maybe we should demand costings for saving the life of every Minister, because it may be more cost-effective to let some die. "Its not a matter of cost-effectiveness"? Precisely.

In the run up to the election I researched economic history and discovered it’s a myth that National Party does a better job of managing the economy. It’s close and debatable , but, if anything, the opposite is true. Today’s news underlines that: www.rnz.co.nz/news/busines...

If they didn't want to be accused of sinophobia they shouldn't have included known sinophobes as an integral part of the reporting and then used sinophobic tropes to try and gussy up an emotional response from the audience. The whole thing is incredibly poor. I was very disappointed with it.

Yes it is sinophobic to tap into clear US-driven propaganda about China & use metaphors like "the Dragon striking" at NZ. Almost *nothing* is right in front of our eyes, many of their examples are from years ago & are just re-hashed, & the use of a tragic car crash as part of that is pretty depraved

The crux of my contempt for RWers is their continuous gaslighting about how, if you want something, all you have to do is set your mind to it and work hard, and you'll achieve it. An outright lie, used to punch down and keep folk down.

that's a wild analogy. the stuff reporting relies deeply on innuendo as well as interviews with anti-china hawks without disclosure. There is almost *zero* nuance in their reporting. There are certainly arguments to be made about great power politics, but they've done those a disservice.

Stuff gave no pushback to these interviewees & didn’t disclose their backgrounds. Given the goals & funding sources of the orgs these people represent, why hasn’t Stuff queried whether those people were deliberately pushing narratives in service of 5 Eyes govt's hostile policies toward China?

There are some serious problems with Stuff’s latest Long Game project. Chief of which is the title and theme, which allude to some kind of decades-long plan by the Chinese government to [ominous music] ‘threaten NZ’s democracy’ and provides little evidence of anything of the sort.
