roberts’ reasoning is fundamentally (lower-case “r”) anti-republican. i know we dunk on the framers here but roberts has issued a rebuke of the revolutionary assumption that concentrated, unaccountable power is a fundamental threat to liberty.

the “some folks just need killing” thing out of north carolina reminds me of a third thing these annoying people are right about: as long as the republican bloodlust grows and their power is unbroken, every election probably will be the most important one of your life

Probably the best president we've had in a hundred years, and the dude SHOULD NOT have run again - he promised he wouldn't! This is suddenly a chance to change to a better horse and by goddess we need to take it

Robinson is hardly the only Republican using language like this. At this point it's pretty close to the official position of the party to call for their political opponents to be arrested, jailed, subject to military tribunal, beaten up, or killed. They're not being subtle about it.

I care for my two disabled elderly parents, I see our abandonment as a people up close every day. I also hear from my 19 year old cleaner that she doesn't know why to vote for these people who strike her as disconnected and out of touch.

We definitely have a systemic problem with aging and the aged, as well as a personal one. Another true thing is that an enormous amount of our elected officials are over 70, because of incumbency, and it is not representative. Both things can be true.

The case for abolition, UBI, universal housing and healthcare has the power of moral force. Couching these positions in the idea they’re actually secretly popular muddles the argument and elides the very real work that needs to be done in convincing people.

In general, I think it’s important to remove the argument for leftist positions from the idea there’s an overlooked silent majority just waiting to support them if only for the machinations of the dastardly elite.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.

And as long as I'm here: Abortion is healthcare. But you do NOT have to be in crisis, healthcare or otherwise, to have the human right—the inalienable right, if you will—to autonomy in your person. The GOP's position is that 50% of Americans don't, in fact, have that right.

You could soon get a shot every six months that would basically eliminate your chance of getting HIV. Taken a step further: we have the tools to eliminate HIV in our lifetime.

Congressional districts are also allocated by state, which undermines representation even beyond the Senate and EC. Like...Wyoming shouldn't even have a single district, but it can't go below 1 so it always will. States are antidemocratic.
