Romney says he would've pardoned Trump if he were Biden because "the country doesn't want to have to go through prosecuting a former president."
I cannot overemphasize how much this idea — that accountability isn't worth it if it's hard — is as wrong today as it was when Ford pardoned Nixon
Maybe Romney could suggest to the former president that he stop doing crimes so he doesn't have to be prosecuted. Or is that too complicated for Romney.
I DON'T want to have to do through seeing a President prosecuted and on trial. That's why they didn't act like giving dingbat criminals doing crime every time they open their mouth or grubby hands. I'm embarrassed and sad that this is happening but it doesn't mean if SHOULDN'T happen.
If there are any kind of crimes that should never be considered for pardon its those around treason, insurrection and, colloquially, attempting a coup.
What is more worthy of deterrence?
AYFKM Romney et al?
The only possible leniency I can even hypothetically wrap my head around is the convict would have to be found guilty, be inches/seconds from physically entering a cell (having written/filmed an exhaustive, public confession/apology owning responsibility--ideally with remorse) before being pardoned.
