We have read Anne Franks diary in school* in Germany. Honestly, that book is quite good. You learn to understand, what it means to be different. What constant fear and persecution feels like. Also, in her diary she shares the thoughts, almost any girl in that age has.

Ashamed, but not surprised, when I saw this was happening in Texas. Then utterly dismayed to find out it's so close to my hometown. My nieces and nephews are being educated in a neighboring city, and I just can't imagine depriving them of such important literature.

When I went to school reading was encouraged and promoted for healthy learning. I believe the more people read and learn, the less likely they are to discriminate against others. But when hatred and discrimination are the goal, reading and knowledge become the enemy.

I still remember reading Anne Frank's Diary and the impact it had on me as a kid. It's an experience I'd never want to be lacking from my life, made me aware of so many things, not least of them the beauties of life she managed to see, despite everything her family were going through.
