the poor quality of reasoning and argumentation here is actually remarkable to witness. you can certainly make the argument that kendrick lamar is referencing the "colonizer" charge used to attack israel and israelis, but you have to *make the argument*.
As I recall, Lamar spent a couple lines before talking about how Drake keeps going to Atlanta to improve his own cred. That's the context of "colonizer".
I don't know if I want to be that guy, but saying that because Drake is Jewish everything negative that anyone says about him is about the Jews feels... Kinda antisemitic? Like, you are the one making it all about the Jews here.
More than anything else I’m astounded by what a poor and unconvincing thinker he is. He gets shit published that would have been laughed out of the hallowed halls of video game journalism website Kotaku
Isn't this the exact kind of social justice inflected brainrot that people like TCW spend 95% of their time complaining about?
"Drake's mom is Jewish and it's always mean to call Jewish people colonizers."
Just doing what he’s paid to do really. Stretch the meanings and implications of things as far as they will go in order to make sorrowful and ultimately meaningless pronouncements about words that weren’t really said.
It is hard to read that and not remember that Thomas Chatterton was a misunderstood 18th century poet who did not deserve to have his name dragged around by some BariWeiss befriending mook. Chatterton, the original, is most def on Kendrick Lamar's side.
Yeahhhh, that argument needs to be shaved with Occam's Razor at the very least. Detailed genealogical records are in no way required to properly parse Lamar's lyrics. Stretch Armstrong couldn't reach that far.
Aside from the stuff you raised, there's a huge set of assumptions. Not least of which is the assumption that Jewish people are pro-Israel and that coloniser is used as a pejorative directed at Jewish people and not, y'know, a political category to describe settler colonial zionism.
instead, we have guilt by word association followed by a conclusion that assumes its own premises, which is that kendrick is representative of a progressive political tendency.
I’m just hoping this doesn’t give Drake any ideas about rehabbing his reputation through a new audience with a new right wing persona if he feels like he ran out of other options after this beef defeat
That post is for sure a reach, but this beef kinda always seemed to be heading in this direction given Kendrick’s affinity for the Black Hebrew Israelites and the kind of shots he was taking at Drake.
(I think Drake is a creep btw and I don’t want this to be read as a defense of him, either.)
It’s pretty clear the colonizer charge is more attuned to Drake exploiting Black labor than anything to do with Israel wtf did they even listen to the lyrics
RAPPERS???
no offense I am not sure even the people running the labels went to college
drugs sex music and one more about good old days in Compton
oh "bitch hoe" tear them down
got a new hit here!
*money rolls in*
This wasn’t my initial read of the line, in my head he was equating Drake with those who would have owned slaves (given the placement and context in the song) but also, KDot is well known for double/triple entendres. As a pasty white man though it’s for sure not my argument to make.
How can I make this rap beef relevant to my corporate overlords? I know, I’ll tie it to Israel (scribbles “Drake Mom - colonizer - anti-semitism?” in notebook)
