"Expand public transit and make it free? And who's gonna pay for that?"
Me you fucking goofy bastard. I pay taxes. give me healthcare instead of buying another 700,000 tear gas canisters for the police to spray on my friends.
Or they could stop spending so much on the military. The US spends more on the military than the next 10 countries combined. We could get by on half the military spending with cutbacks and spend that on social systems and modern infrastructure.
*Makes every road a toll road*
Well, who would pay for this if everyone could just use it for free?
(Obviously not fuel tax, that pays only a tiny fraction)
If people don't want to pay for public transit/healthcare/whatever maybe they should go after rich people who literally hoard enough money to LITERALLY care for the ENTIRETY of world's population
About 50¢ of every dollar of federal taxes goes to the war machine. Of course there’s nothing better that spending could go to like healthcare, infrastructure, or environmental issues. But hey we’re safe from scary foreigners! 🛌
In downtown Detroit, the streetcar on Woodward is now free (at point of use) thanks to a grant from the State of Michigan, and it is the greatest thing. We *can* have nice things, we just have to be willing to pay for them.
That's a great idea except whenever it's tried in the US, free mass transit becomes free housing, whose residents don't want to share with guests just trying to get to work or go shopping.
🤷♂️
There are difficult reasons we can't have nice things.
but taxes steal from people, don't you know? People don't want to take a cut of the money they earn even though in theory the less money you make, the less you should pay in taxes...
america is stupid
Denmark has been struggling with this one for decades. At this point making all public transit free (and we have really good public transit infrastructure) would be less than a $100 tax hike per year. And we'd make a lot of that back by not having to worry about faire evasions. But noooo.
Right? I pay for quite a lot of tax, which I expect to as someone who lives in a country which provides services. But my god, you had better use that tax to help people.
The government is going to pay for that. The people who literally print the money and control the interest rates. MMT's not something only five people have heard of any more
We fire every NYPD cop that has ever caused a judgement to be paid from tax dollars, put the remaining 12 on $200k/year in salary with no overtime, and use the remaining 6 billion a year to upgrade the MTA with no fares charged to board a train.
I agree, but it's a question of how do you do it. For most mid to large cities in the US fares cover 20-30% of their operation expenses. If you get rid of fares tomorrow either you cut service or find new tax money. If you can find that tax money it would be better spent increasing service.
Whenever I talk about reallocating money away from military use I always think of conservatives being Cutman from the Megaman show and going "No! Now you've got my weapon!"
