Just thinking back to Alito’s confirmation hearing, when Democrats dared to suggest he was a bit partisan and then Republicans got furious because the rude questions made poor Mrs. Alito cry.
And it shouldn’t escape notice that the same people who bitch about universities and other institutions not being intellectually diverse or silencing the right are so fucking cloistered and fragile they get into yard decor battles with the neighbors when they feel their views are challenged.
That nearly four years have transpired since this happened in Alexandria, Virginia—a mere hop-skip from official DC, home of the NYT DC bureau — is a major indictment of the NYT DC press corps: unless I’m mistaken, Jodi Kantor is based in NYC for the Times. 🤦🏽♀️🫠
I still remember the alleged ploy GWB pulled by nominating Harriet Miers as, at least what was believed at the time, a shield to allow an extreme (but less extreme in comparison) nominee to get through.
Jenny Sanford is the only Republican wife I’ve respected because when her husband had his disastrous “hiking along the Appalachian trail” press conference, she was like yeah, I’m not doing the “supportive wife standing silently behind you” thing, good luck out there!
We, as a country, don’t consider Bush v. Kerry as devastating for America as we probably should. (Although maybe Bill Frist’s Senate blocks whomever Kerry nominates to replace Rehnquist.)
Sam Alito, like his maxi-me Scalia, benefited tremendously from the controversy of a chief justice confirmation and sailing under the radar in the wake. Both times the afterthought proved far more toxic.
I only watched part of the Alito hearings because every time he spoke, my tortie threw up. At first it was funny, then I worried about her dental health. I turned off C-SPAN and she didn’t puke again, but I was left nauseous because Animals Know.
if I've learned anything in the past couple days it's that Democrats should have been meaner to Romney in 2012 and they should've made Mrs. Alito cry harder in 2006
