I don't like putting it this way, but everyone needs to learn how to hate. It was great when we didn't have to, and could imagine it was all a civil debate. But that's donezo; survival of democracy requires treating its enemies with just raw contempt, rage, scorn, and yes, hatred.

I spent period afterwards homeless and in unstable housing/employment. Military didn't really get me out, they threw me away as soon as I was physically broken. I had to climb back out on my own.

Yes, but the process of making soldiers kind of destroys the person and rebuilds them into someone else. Same way fine salami is made. The process is why militaries prefer kids, more neuroplasticity to help them heal after the tearing down and rebuilding. And the focus on soldiers mental well-being.

And they are aware of human limitations to the point that they will take people with ASD and ADHD if that person is pursuing a specific field that the military knows they will succeed at. They avoid people who are a certain type of fragile, and hunt for kids who have already survived adversity.

Which is why I believe areas of extreme poverty are tolerated. Maintains the pool of desperate, hardened and motivated smart kids for the meat grinder. Well fed kids are unlikely to tolerate the "unification through shared opposition" that is the military method of building cohesion.
