I think part of what is making everyone so deranged right now is that we all know the polls are really off but have no idea what direction. Yeah sure Biden is up five in Michigan and down seven in Pennsylvania, that checks out, that’s where things actually are.

i feel like people misunderstand nostalgia as a blanket praising of an entire timeframe instead of a celebration of the things that made that time different, for better or for worse. i also cannot remember any point in time that didnt suck so i feel like thats always moot.

“Mix small actions into your dialogue” is maybe good as intro-level writing advice, but quickly hits a ceiling if you’re just using it for pacing or to shallowly “reveal character.” You want to think more on a scene level than on a line level. How is the scene blocked, what is its physical character

the climate story right now is in a very weird state of flux a) the warming we've priced in is bad and really starting to show itself b) the renewable story is astoundingly good and getting better we are left with "warming is going to get worse but almost certainly not as much as it could have"

It’s more complicated than prose because when you’re writing dialogue, the essence of the “scene” can be the dialogue or the “scene” can exist WITHIN the dialogue. Dostoevsky often gets away with long stretches of uninterrupted dialogue becauase his characters tell each other deeply-embodied stories

Comics (not just parasuperhero stuff) generally wants action and movement in a dialogue scene. Prose wants something that’s both broader and usually more difficult and that I’ll call “embodiment.” You have to bring the reader into a physical space so they don’t feel like they’re reading a chatlog

Watchmen show is A) A lesser Lindelof project, it has great episodes but fucks up the finale weirdly badly and C) Probably better than the comic, which is good but not a top five Class of ‘86 superhero comic for me

When I was a kid I just liked whatever was in the boy’s happy meal. But eventually led me to stuff that got me more interested in form and quality over genre signifiers. Tarantino’s pastiche stuff was like a Rosetta Stone for a preteen getting dissatisfied with watching whatever crummy scifi movie
