Trump couldn't find the word "restaurant" today. He was talking about McDonald's and flailingly called it a "store... where people are eating." It's been ages since I watched him talk for 30 mins; the language deficits/repetitions are a shock. Transcript here. braddelong.substack.com/p/reading-do...
My preschooler forgot the word "restaurant" during the pandemic because he hadn't used it in so long and he was still pretty new to talking. He went with, "you know, the dinner store?" Not far off!
He also said Merchan "looks like an angel" and one of his witnesses was "literally crucified"
Is he losing it or just a really really really really really really really really dumb guy who is also not at all bright?
Cognitive decline for aging related reasons or neurological issues.
Before gabapentin (fibromyalgia), I could blank on common words like car. Still happens occasionally when extremely tired.
This word finding difficulty was one of the first indicators of dementia in my mother, who's gone from a driving, normally functioning elder to someone who can't drive, can't use her computer, can't really use her phone, and has ZERO short term memory...in two years. IYKYK
You read things like this and you wonder if the guy got zapped by the meds they put him on when he had covid. I'm not excusing anything... I'm saying covid does this to the brain (scrambles it like eggs), so does long covid, so do some of the anti-viral meds.
A geeky friend of mine called it "word server failure", and I've had it happen to me occasionally for most of my life. Especially when I'm tired.
That said, it's been noticeably more frequent since I had COVID.
Also, yes, it happened more to my elderly mom as her cognitive impairment got worse.
The whole transcript has a very Up Goer Five (xkcd.com/1133/) feel to it. Like, when he feels an emotional connection to a word like "fixer" or "fascist" or "tyrant" he's got it, and he remembers some proper names, but in terms of having a vocabulary of words available to him, it's just not there.
I wonder if the debate will be a good opportunity to put this on display, otherwise everything is delivered through quotes and soundbites that don’t carry this context
I watched my Gram, then Dad after her slide into dementia. There's a point where it flips from forgetful but functional over to a rapid downhill slide into obvious dementia. TFG has been showing the same indicators in the clips I've seen. Wondering what shape he'll be in come this fall.
His deterioration continues apace. Apparent even before his conviction, so it can't be just attributed to stress. Comparing his rambling nonsense from 2016 to his current rambling nonsense today, the difference really jumps out.
Almost the 1st time I knew my FIL was headed down that long lonesome path was when he couldn’t remember the word “wedding” and said instead “rite of nuptial mass.” #1001 on the list of why not to elect this guy
