I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.

a lot of this is straight out of the Reagan playbook. the gipper also practically shut down the EPA. but it re-emerged out of absolute necessity. the situation is so much more dire today. now SCOTUS has crossed the rubicon. they are running the anti-life equation out in the open.

1) The Spur Award isnt the most elegant award, aptly since it's for writing westerns, set in rugged places. I went to Oklahoma to receive mine in person (has more progressive people than I thought, & so does the Western Writers of America.) Mine has my name on it, and the novel, GUNMETAL MOUNTAIN.

True. I read Watts first, then Witter Bynner for some reason. When I got to James Legge I was studying Classical Chinese and I could almost see what he was doing. Trying to link up glosses word by word. Pretty dreadful. Later I liked John C H. Wu.
