a lot of scoffing at warnings re: "end democracy" that seem to overlook the fact that democracy is already effectively ended in a bunch of US states. NC is a 50/50 state but Dems need an unlikely string of consecutive victories in the state supreme court to even have the chance to elect a government
Yeah, as a left-wing person who has lived my entire adult life in deep-red states (including Alabama currently), my general feeling on "democracy" is "Well, it sounds like a lovely idea, wish I could get some of that." Voting, calling your reps, all completely pointless exercises for me.
I just spent (wasted?) the better part of an evening arguing with these people and holeee fuck are they uninterested in facts. It's 100% vibes based, and if you stick to your guns they'll just strawman you into oblivion.
flyover states that had solidly blue legislatures as recently as the George W. Bush era shifted red in response to Obama & the Republicans who swept in used the 2010 & 2020 redistricting to gerrymander themselves into permanent majorities
meanwhile, dems in NY are giving away House seats to the GOP
So is it your argument that democracy is dead in Washington state? How about Massachusetts? Or is it only dead if Democrats don’t have substantial numbers of elected politicians?
Even worse, the Dems held enough seats to maintain the Dem governor's veto til one of their members got mad at being criticized and switched parties, turning a rare deep-blue seat into another Republican gain so they could just override anything.
I got into it with my mom the other day about this -- "surely they don't really want that/will change course when they see how it actually turns out." Huge swaths of the country have lived it for a decade or more! This is not hypothetical!
They need to stop sucking aipac funded dick and focus on the genocide
That's like the biggest issue for them right now and they're completely ignoring it
It’s fun that in my state there’s a 50/50 split in voters but an unfixable republican supermajority. Almost like my vote doesn’t matter hahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Alabama is a single-party state and there is no democracy. The only rights the people receive are those provided by the federal government. The main freedom Alabamians have is the right to leave if they don't like things. They're reminded often of that.
