You walk over to the shelf with the books on and you sign them. Then you walk away.

Great tip. I've been signing "Neil Gaiman" on random magazines at the mechanics' and barber shops for years.

Every time I walk into bookstores and sign my name into Neil Gamin books, I get yelled at, kicked out, or generally told to knock it off, so your mileage may vary. I guess it is a "famous person privilege" right there.

I actually used to work at a book store and caught a newer author doing this. I just politely asked what he was doing and he showed me the photo on the jacket with a huge grin on his face. I am sure he felt super proud, I moved a couple copies to the local author display and added Signed stickers.

When you say "you walk over" and "you sign then", is than an instruction? Because I could indeed sign your name, but it would absolutely not look like your signature and I'd probably get in significant trouble, even if I said "But Neil told me to!"

Lemme tell you, I slide on over to the G section of every airport bookstore I can find, and open every copy. I have no shame and it’s a lot of fun, imagining maybe Neil has been here. Like opening Wonka bars.

I found my copy of Stardust in a Borders in Portland years ago. Predated social media so I assumed at the time they were left over from an event. Still one of my favorite books, both for the story and signature.

I confess that I did this in Seattle, to an anthology I'd contributed to. My then-boyfriend was a popular tech writer and used to do this on a regular basis, if he went into a random bookstore and saw something he'd written on the shelf.

Do you add anything like ‘secret signing’/date/store location etc or literally just your signature? I love it that you do it on accessibly affordable paperbacks too.

Is the trickiest part (if you're doing this after you arrive, which I would imagine is not something you would do unless you were on a layover) unexpected fountain pen leakage from being on the plane? Or has that problem been mostly solved? I've had some spectacular... explosions & no longer try :(
