I read the sentence "child care has become a market-based system captured, to an increasing degree, by private-equity firms, which now own eight of the 11 largest chains" and -- knowing how private equity firms operate -- the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

Maybe in state legislatures, but generally elected officials DGAF about petitions because most signers aren’t constituents, and also because petitions are low commitment actions. Phone calls, individual letters, or office visits, faxes all matter. Petitions…meh.

There are no practical actions that can be taken by people in power to limit the damage of Alito (and Thomas), but politically, they can use hearings and spectacle to deny consent. And that is actually an extremely potent rebuke in a government that runs on popular consent!

On further reflection, I guess there’s more than one way to look at the stories about Martha-Ann Alito.

One way is she’s the spouse of, and very possibly influential over, a Supreme Court justice, using their home to convey political messages, and that’s news. /1

Perhaps the best thing one gets from higher education is understanding that a lot of questions don't have clear answers, and a lot of problems lack clear solutions. It follows that those who are trying to dismantle higher ed gain power by providing wrong answers and fake solutions.

what's driving me up a wall about the whole "vote for Biden" debate on the left is we already had this conversation in 2016. Trump won, and it turned out it was not only as bad as the electoralists warned, it was worse. It was so bad we cannot risk a second term. This is not an open question
