The thing is, for some people unfortunately, there is no amount of evidence we can show them to pull them out of the doom spiral that "Joe Biden has dementia". I understand it's a panic response, and ideally you can reach people with info like this before things get too bad in their heads, but yeah.

I realized the main reason I relate to Marcille from Dungeon Meshi is that the Black Mage who specializes in destruction and spitting in God's eye is also a fussy TA who just wants to read cheesy romance stories with her autistic girlfriend.

It's definitely why the strongest push from the right online right now is actively trying to drum up voter apathy. "Swing voters" only seem to exist insofar as the people who already have an established ideology but may decide staying home instead of voting is okay for them.

Wasn’t going to wade into discourse on here again yet but let me just say, the jokes and threats (or whatever they are) from U.S. folks of relative privilege about leaving the country give away a lot of how people locate themselves, or rather don’t, in relation to neighbors and community.

I think reading a transcript of the debate would hopefully help? His answers were very clearly not gibberish, it's just he had a hard time being heard and occasionally would mix up words but then immediately correct.

I'm curious what example there is to show his stark cognitive decline that you'd personally point to? The debate? His voice sounded hoarse, he may have had a cold, but his answers were coherent. His SofU address and Stern interview were both great. Is this just a panic response?

Honestly calling people who grift and peddle in despair "Wormtongue" was such a good move on Tolkeins part and such a good name haha Especially in the modern context of not wanting to let particular brain worms into your head and the cognitohazard that is reading social media/the news sometimes

One of my favorite quotes in LotR comes from Gandalf & unfortunately never made it into the movie. It feels important because it's Gandalf directly addressing Theoden & says flat out that he can't help those that don't ask for it, who have lost themselves to apathy/despair, and who won't listen.

In general it seems like history has mostly forgiven Lenin for a lot of his intentional atrocities because Stalin was noticeably much worse. (And that's of course not to say that a revolution wasn't needed or that the Tsar was good, but Lenin has never seemed like someone worth elevating)

The thing about Lenin is, to me he always seemed just as bad as Stalin, just without the opportunity to get to where Stalin did. He pulled a lot of the same authoritarian acts that would later pave the road for Stalin's worst actions and used famine as a political tool against his enemies.

This is absolutely true haha. I was struggling to find a sci-fi series to jump into after finishing the expanse and a random post online basically was gushing over "Children of Time". Gave it a try after a lot of misses with other books and it was so good! Really excited to read the sequels ~

Like if you're an artist you could tag yourself with an artist label and maybe even see a feed with just artist labels. Same with like politics or what nots. Labels actually seem really neat, not as a policing tool but as a self categorizing thing

But even in local friend groups there has always been an apparent difference between people who genuinely want things to get better and to work towards greater equality vs others under the same tent who just liked laughing at liberals and sometimes fantasized about societal destruction.
