While attempting to purchase a condo, I learned that the seller did not want to sell a home to me because I am Black. You can read the full article in The New York Times, written by Debra Kamin, with photos by Erin Schaff here: www.nytimes.com/2024/05/31/r...
Shortly before I was born, my parents were denied the sale of a house because they were Jewish. The seller had agreed, but the homeowner's association blocked the sale. That was almost sixty years ago. It's amazing and sad to me that this type of thing still happens.
Anyone should be proud to be selling to two such accomplished people. I think it's obvious that the upgrade the home needed most and finally received was upgraded owners.
The agents on both sides have an obligation to make this right, one way or another. It’s their responsibility to understand your civil rights & protect you. The seller should pay the repairs, but whether or not she will, her agent, & if they won’t, your agent should eat this cost
“Well after the Civil Rights movement, after Covid, after George Floyd, you would think society isn’t still thinking this way. But in 2024, they still are.”Dr. Ronald Gamble Jr
Racism brain rot runs so deep that a seller was willing to forgo payment to ensure a black person doesn’t get to live in a home that the seller no longer even wants
This is one of the few articles I have ever read in the NYT that asks the right question
"How are you not tolerating this?"
Good luck on closing quickly!
Red lines and the good ol boy network strikes again. Jim Crowe was not killed by The Civil Rights Act, he needs to be eradicated permanently this time.
The thing is, reading this, I would love to have this couple as neighbors.
I know this isn't the main thing to fixate on here (or maybe it is), but I'm really trying to understand the motivations behind telling you how the seller was feeling about the sale vs. putting the seller in her place and finalizing the sale.
Best of luck in your case, and if it's this broad, I hope you sue her until she begs for mercy www.pilotonline.com/2018/07/06/b... “It is so vital to preserve our heritage for the generations to come” my ass
I just can't even imagine what you felt when your broker said those words to you. This is exactly why people should never accept the "be color-blind approach" and why DEI is important.
Dumb question, but can you not sue the agent (or his employer) for the cost of any repairs due to encouraging you to remove the inspection contingency? Perhaps they can in turn sue the seller to recoup some of their loss, but it seems like they need to learn a lesson here too
Well at the very least it sounds like your transaction may be going through. I hope so. And I hope you can put all of this behind you. On another note you and Dr. Gamble sound like an amazing power couple! Go STEM!
Appalling. The worst people live too long causing too much unnecessary grief and trauma for everyone else, I’m so sorry this happened to you during what should have been a transaction of joy
So terrible that this ever went on, let alone still in this day and age. I am really sorry that you have experienced this. Glad you have fought for your rights. (But you shouldn’t have had to!)
Such a travesty! So unfair. I'm very sorry this happened.
Every realtor involved should lose their license for participating in this. The law is strict and and they are taught the penalties.
End segregation now!
