Involuntary psychiatric treatment happens too much already. In most places you can be involuntary committed for up to 72 hours. They force you to consent by threatening it will be worse if they get a judge involved. And boy does it fucking suck. Collective “treatment” that’s mostly just neglect.

I think a person needs to be mentally aware that they are declining care in order to decline care provided by the state do to their inability to care for themselves. Furthermore, they cannot be a danger to themselves or others when doing so.

I was at NIMH during the Carter administration and am proud of the work we did toward deinstitutionalization. The failure to deliver on the promise happened because the effort was supposed to be coupled to a national community based treatment and support program that never happened because Reagan.
