🧵 In 2020, I nearly died from mysterious industrial chemical exposure at my apartment. Later, I discovered my employer was dumping toxic waste into our windows from their Skunkworks semiconductor fab next-door. I tipped off US EPA, who then raided them in 2023. EPA sent me the report on Friday. 💀 ⬇️

Something that probably flew under most people's radar, but is kind of a big deal (it allows those veterans to access VA care and disability etc) A very good thing.

Please do not contribute to the fucking suck of Aaron's job by falling into the trap of believing that he is the sole person who sets the policy he is executing or that failure to act on an issue yet means that the issue will never be decided.

Bluesky is trying a different approach with offering multiple moderation services that people can subscribe to. Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I've been deeply interested in the outcome while also deeply concerned about some aspects of the approach.

T&S in a federated protocol is an entirely new challenge. ActivityPub (Mastodon et al) has dealt with it by devolving the responsibility entirely onto the individuals running individual nodes of the network. That approach has been, to put it charitably, a fucking disaster.

Okay. I am probably going to regret wading into this again, but The Discourse about child protection issues on Bluesky has escalated to the point where people are making extremely serious accusations against the head of Bluesky T&S, and y'all need to stop. It is unhinged QAnon batshittery.

In no small part because pretty much anyone who'd *want* a national censorship system has an ideological purpose already in mind, they just think that it's a "self-evidently good one".

Humans and augmented humans can have null feed IDs. I knew from my shows that it meant different things depending on what polity, station, area, etc., they lived in. Here on Preservation it meant “please don’t interact with me.” It was perfect.

Social media accelerates the built-in, comfy, brain-pleasing urge to make insta-judgments. We need deeper and more nuanced approaches.

@rahaeli.bsky.social provides some in the realms of social media and other software. I find threads like this one hyper-useful for perspective on what companies do.

But you do it anyway, because it's the job in front of you, and *someone* needs to do it, and the choices aren't going to magically become less shitty just because you're not the one who has to make them. *raises glass of caffeinated beverage in wry salute*. Here's to ya.

Right, and if that's your mission, and you get a choice between "if you don't block this in this region then nothing you do will be available in this region", I don't know if the choice is obvious. I would hate to have to make it.

black panther both printed money and was one of the most critically successful MCU movies, which is to say that the people who complain about diverse casts don’t do so because they are concerned with making a better product, they do so out of an aesthetic (and ideological) objection to diversity

If I had run a thought experiment on “what are the characteristics that would make someone’s accidental, preventable death a national news story with real policy consequences?”, Angelo Chao would be the answer. How is there not a national recall of all Teslas? The doors don’t open in an emergency!

It's easy to discount a lot of Tesla's terrible design choices as funny examples of Musk's idiocy, but there is a reason why cars have standardised gear shifting and mechanical door releases. Every Tesla like this should be pulled from the road permanently

Did you see the part where Teslas don’t have a gear shift, and the car just “guesses” whether you want to go forward or backward, and you have to swipe on a touch screen to change it? She probably only drove it into the pond because the car “guessed” wrong.

The windows on a tesla don't roll down without power. The doors do not open without power. The car lost power when it hit the water. You can't break the windows because they are bullet proof. She died becuase Elon Musk built a death trap of a car, and the US government allowed it to be built.

"Just disassemble a door panel to get to the manual override" is one of those things that I'm sure sounds like a perfectly reasonable solution to someone who never thinks about the kind of situation where you might *need* the manual override.
