Lacking energy due to the heat? 🥵 Repeat after me: many things worth doing are worth doing badly. Half-assed toothbrushing is better than none. Eating ice cream is better than not eating. Do what you can, and try not to feel guilty about it. You don't deserve that.

Over the weekend, I found a tiny pink plastic shoe on the ground near my office. I placed it at eye level, on a wooden post, by the stairs. This morning, on that same post, was this picture.

If you want to know what's wrong with the world, it's that we're getting another non-GDT 'Hellboy' and not another 'Dungeons & Dragons' or 'Dredd' movie.

I don't know how I'm not supposed to spiral into deep despair unless I completely disassociate. Like, just hide within my la-la land of a brain, where it's my own private Disney World at all times. Nothing matters anymore. There's simply no point in trying.

Also, not for nothing, but this kind of usage is really just indicative of the "terminally online" cohort. You could say 'it's giving [BLANK]" to plenty of people who'd have no idea what the heck you were on about.

Or, and hear me out, what if slang is *still* performing its function of indicating who's a member of a certain group, it's just that the groups are changing?

I think about As Above, So Below more than is probably reasonable. For starters, how they actually filmed it so successfully in such cramped places. Also, the permits they needed.

I mean, yes, we had the Dr Scholl’s on the left, but no, I mean clogs. Typically leather uppers but wooden soles. Big, clompy shoes.

When people bring up 80s fashion, they tend to reference the big hair, big shoulders, parachute pants, and leg warmers. They never, ever, bring up the clogs. WHY were clogs a thing? WHY?

Part of the disconnect is that while a game is a piece of art, it's also a product. If I buy, I dunno, a shirt, I can do whatever I want with it. Dye it, cut it up, wear it on my feet, whatever. It's mine. And it's not wholly unreasonable to also want that from an interactive experience. BUT.

"There's an entire thing I could get into on how like... I don't think games should always tell the player 'yes.' We need to go "nope, check this out. The characters have agency, and sometimes you need to accept a 'no.'"" I love this very much.

To bring this back to DA, I love that you couldn't romance Varric. He's much more precious to me as a ride or die bestie than he would've been murmuring generic sweet nothings.

Yep, absolutely see that. That said, Baldur's Gate engendered empathy and you could shag...pretty much everyone. But I absolutely agree with your core point that typically it's more about pushing the right buttons to get the love prize.

On the one hand, I agree that it's nice that not *everyone* in the roster is ready to hop in bed with you. It forces you to view the ones who aren't into it as themselves as opposed to romance targets. On the other...meh, let people have their fun.

We are rarely challenged to confront our own biases and assumptions; quite the opposite, in fact. It's such a valuable skill, to pause, back up, and say Ok, what do I actually *know* and how do I know it? Great reminder.
