Blown away by this review of "Flowers from the Black Sea" that appeared on Amazon yesterday: "A joy to devour. A great read. The author is as significant as Eric Ambler, Ian Fleming and Graham Greene in bringing the vivid, often brutal, setting of Turkey alive almost as an additional character...."

Anyone have a good guide to simple home electric appliance repairs? I have a SPST momentary switch I need to replace on a device plugged into 240v current and I'm not sure what tolerances I need in a replacement part. I found the spec sheet for the original component and it feels a bit overkill?

The AKP+MHP alliance has taken minds captive. The lack of critical voices in the mainstream public discussion about the Merih Demiral spectacle is a testament. A sense of loneliness in the world and strong nationalist entitlement as a response are normalized.

Delighted to find that poet Dennis Lee, whose Civil Elegies poem contains the couplet which inspired this maxim, also wrote the lyrics for Fraggle Rock.

I’m going to the Ukraine demonstration outside of Norway’s parliament today at 12, with my son.

Would love it if any of you #fellas in Oslo want to join me.

If you haven’t been to these yet, it’s quite heart warming. Feels good to support these Ukrainians who have been demonstrating for 863 days

Do I have followers who work as waiters or flight attendants? I'm curious about the impact of COVID on your profession. In the past months I've seen waiters and flight attendants working with masks on, and others not. If you don't mask at work, do you get COVID? (This is not for publication.) Thx!

It looks as if I’m finally going to have to replace my Kindle, which has served me well for twelve years (the battery isn’t holding its charge, and the long outdated software is starting to show its limitations). Does anyone have experience of the Kindle Paperwhite?

The lobby did a generally decent job last night. But this language/mindset around British Muslim voting trends is profoundly unsettling and offensive.

Some initial thoughts on the UK elections. 1. It confirms once again that when a center-right party veers to the hard right to weaken the far right, it ends up doing the opposite. After purging moderates and going full-on wingnuts and fever swamp, the Tories got decimated by Reform, not Labour. 🧵

It's an unpopular opinion right now, but I suspect giving the Tory Right too much time to think and plot is deeply unwise. A Tory time of reflection that drags out too long can escalate into a post-Tory civil war.

Labour won decisively by playing to 2024 conditions. It shifted to the right, took advantage of Conservative implosion and division. It told its left leaning urban constituency - young voters and ethnic minorities - to get lost, and gambled correctly that losses in urban areas won't matter. 1/

Worth noting that Le Pen’s party got just over 4 million votes in the 2019 legislative election and Reform got just over 4 million in the UK last night. Different countries with different systems but still

I think this sober take is correct. After initial relief we no longer have to live through daily Tory psychodrama, the focus will shift to all the problems - including the fact that Reform, with its simplistic populist ‘solutions’ to complex problems, got ~15% of the vote; & that turnout was v low.

The thing no one's talking about this morning is, whether they're aware of it or not, this has happened whilst the first effects of hard Brexit on our cost of living are being felt. If Labour insist on taking up this baton in full they're going to feel the effects of it next time
