How is that odd? This is not a symmetrical issue. The GOP leadership and the base are committed to Trump precisely for who he is. This is a problem for the Dems whose leadership has been downplaying a significant issue which has not manifested itself in its full magnitude.

I find blaming Netanyahu a bit facile. Israel has elected Likud PMs for over 2 decades, along with extremist parties. There is continuity of policy that goes very far back. For example, I doubt that Sharon would have acted any differently in this scenario.

I really have a hard time believing that people are so stupid not to see why Hamas wouldn't want to give away the only leverage they have without any guarantee in exchange. "We'll suspend bombing until you return the hostages, then we'll resume bombing" is not a serious negotiating offer.
