Re-upping this excellent article by WRI colleagues on increasing competition for crops—not only to feed people directly but also to feed animals and cars (biofuels). Did you know that since the 1960s, the share of global cropland used for domestic food consumption has declined from ~50% to 37%? 🧪

Anyone else have the feeling that people are asking the questions that they should have been 20-30 years ago, but not the questions we need to ask now? Lot of forecasting talk. Lot of transition plans with nice smooth curves out gently into the future.

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

I’m optimistic that they’re really trying but I’m doubtful that it’s entirely by choice. I suspect they’ve seen the need to preempt interoperability regulations set by the EU’s DMA, and they’re using it as an opportunity.

It’s not at all the only sane policy. Why can’t I rent out my house while I go on holiday? Just regulate it heavily like Amsterdam has done. Max 30 days a year and AirBnB has to report it to the council. Also only Airbnb-ing your primary residence should be possible.

Also for driving. The question basically assumes everyone drives a vehicle, so hiring or buying an EV is counted as a positive. What about those who don’t drive at all? The best car is no car.

If someone's telling you that the sub-categories of climate change causes needs to be solved in serial, not parallel, there's an extremely high chance they're putting themselves absolutely last in the queue of actions

TIL: Europe's emissions trading system is about half the value of the world's regulated carbon markets that in total trade about $100 billion of emission credits annually. In comparison, the voluntary carbon market that trades cheap offsets is just over $1 billion last year.

Unfortunately almost every news article covering the paper is reporting the figure as if that’s the actual figure we can expect, which is massively misleading.
Some like arstechnica.com/science/2024... do at least say why the figure is too low (in the last paragraph…) but most don’t even do that.

Yeah from my admittedly fast reading of that paper they’re only using temp and precipitation, so the 6x figure is WAY off. The paper does say this, so this is not a criticism of the paper. Well, sorta, they use soft scientific language like ‘lower bound’ which means it’s not blatantly obvious.

This article nicely captures the two sides of this debate. I side with the anonymous SBTI staffer arguing that unregulated instruments often overstate the greenhouse gases stopped AND justify further emissions by polluters. To the great detriment of the Global South. www.ft.com/content/b07e...

This is hugely important to watch.
The UN FAO has been misrepresenting the impact of dietary change on reducing greenhouse gas emissions — ignoring widely known scientific results.
The real question is why?
