Those switching from the Tories to Labour or the LibDems strongly support the net zero climate target (73%). This compares to 61% of people overall who support Net Zero. Even 42% of Reform voters support climate action, despite Farage's grifting climate denial.

The fact that Labour scored fewer votes in 2024 than in 2017 or 2019 isn't a pointer to failure in this election, the failure was in the last two in which votes were accumulated under FPTP in areas they weren't needed.

If Labour can immediately fix self-checkouts so that when it says "card only" you don't still have to choose card as a payment method when you checkout that would probably be enough to keep people happy for the first week or so.

"...the proportion of state-educated members has risen from 54% to 63%. That is still far short of the 88% of people among the general public who went to comprehensive schools, but it represents the highest proportion of state-schooled members ever recorded in parliament."

Inspired by @kellyhereid.bsky.social, I'm going to try getting better at sharing papers I'm finding valuable, if not daily, then perhaps weekly.

This paper sets out some principles & practices for researchers to help avoid 'extractive' relations with communities hosting energy developments:

Carbon footprints among different income deciles in Germany are pretty similar.... until you look at transport. Once again, a very strong argument for a frequent fliers tax.

Very much hoping this is a government that just quietly and thoughtfully gets things done. Odd in retrospect that the opposite has become so normalized.

New from me: The UK election outcome is a rare (of late) win for a party promising to tackle climate change -- now the Labour Party faces an uphill battle to implement its green agenda. (No paywall!)

There have already been several good to-do lists for the incoming Labour government focused on energy/climate. For my money, many (if not all) of the items can be made easier by better public and community engagement around the meaning and implications of net zero.

This is where I have a small, boring bit of advice, from my time managing a customer contact centre for a central government department: write letters to your MP asking them to raise issues with secretaries of state; make the letters unique, not copy-and-paste campaigns; be direct, not cranky.

In the early Twitter days science types would show up and post when they had a new paper. Wonderful! But real talk y'all: papers take ages to write. So, post about other people's stuff! You read a paper and it was cool! Or you had a question! Or it tied to this other thing! Tag the authors!

Funny/sad to see the energy/climate community pretty much fail this collective action problem. If the core superposters all left X for the same new platform, then X would become an echo chamber for deniers/delayers and everyone the superposters want to reach - journos, pols, etc. - would follow.
