We’ve taught these kids that if someone is shooting irrationally, it’s up to them to interpose their bodies between themselves and their shooter because even if they die, it might save someone’s lives.
Of course they’re fucking doing it.
I genuinely wonder if a lot of the uptick in student protest organizing (over the last several years) is driven partly by this mindset (we have to save ourselves, and do it collectively)…
I used to really like Heinlein's books in high school and college, and I thought "the Crazy Years" are coming soon...and then I sorta outgrew all his pessimistic libertarian mindset. And now here we are. Jfc I feel so sorry for people in my former home. (I moved overseas a generation ago.)
It sounds like this is just a variation on the "run, hide, fight" active shooter response strategy, which actually makes a lot of sense...
For adults.
Teaching this to young children is *completely fucking insane.*
really does feel like the top of the third act where the audience realizes that “wax on/wax off” was teaching something else entirely all along - and now the shit is about to hit the FAN
I really wanna say something snarky or silly to lighten the mood. Nope. This till the jam outta my donut. My kids will be loud so others might live. Fuck
It's interesting to hear anecdotes of people refusing to move or coming home from the US sharply. I get asked if I'm going to move to live with SO in the US a lot. We don't want kids but I remember them being at uni and every week there was some kind of shooting in the area... God the stress was 😭
It is so disgusting that legislators and Justices just sit back and let a generation to be traumatised, just so they can take their blood money. Especially when a majority of gum owners would accept sensible fun controls.
Or, the usual absolutely crazy advise of every other country to the US, we just take people's guns away. But hey that certainly won't work only because it worked for *everyone*, right?
you see, what I don't understand is why a lot of these similar people want to force childbirth at all costs (even at the mother's life) just to propose that kids use themselves as meat shields. last I checked school-age students (especially in elementary school) AREN'T enlisted. The fuck man
I grew up within spitting distance of Redmond and the worst I ever had to go through in school was fire/earthquake drills. (The earthquake drills came in handy.)
But reading this is like a punch to the gut.
Unbearably sad. That people care more about unfettered access to guns than the lives of children makes me sick to my soul. The non-response to Uvalde from the Texas govt should have been met with dragging them into the streets and tarring & feathering them all.
well come on, isn’t kindergarten the place where kids learn how to share, show and tell, and take one for the team in the event of a mass shooting because society has decided that bloodsport is normal
And gun owners would rather vote for someone to decrease regulations and make them more likely to go on a rampage than be responsible with their fucking-stupid toys if they're having a bad day.
They say "Biden's coming for our guns!"; well yeah, maybe he should. This is sickening...
I was teaching 7th grade when I did my first "intruder drill". I didn't anticipate it would trigger the PTSD I was in denial about so I didn't excuse myself from the classroom and let another teacher run the drill, which is why the principal yelled at me for "traumatizing the kids". LIKE SRSLY.
My wife and I moved from Colorado to Canada last fall for exactly this reason. I kept my three-year-old home from preschool the day they were going to put her through an active shooter drill.
I can't help but contrast and compare this with how much and how vociferous the shows of force are being rolled out at universities right now.
Bringing out assault rifles and plate carriers against barricades made of park benches
Fuck me, man.
Except... if everyone's being taught that, then everybody's running around making noise and nobody's running around. So this plan doesn't even make any sense.
In this country, it’s apparently easier to ask a child to lay down their life for their classmates than to ask a gun hoarder to part with their weapons.
WHAT THE FLAMING HELL??????!!!!!!
