My tentative answer is that the 1974-1997 period coincides with the invention of neo-noir and eventually the erotic thriller and the erotic thriller is incompatible with a knight-errant figure like Marlowe or the Dude. Can't do that if you are leading with your erect member.

Some great suggestions already: Repo Man, Liquid Sky, After Hours (!). I think one that reflects the lunacy of the time, although not necessarily the zeitgeist, is Better Off Dead (a pure comedy).
