As a kid, I loved shows like Unsolved Mysteries for the spooky thrills the supernatural segments offered. As an adult, it's hard not to connect the public's lack of media literacy in part with the horrendously skewed way these stories are reported to give full-on batshittery an air of credibility.

I live in Alberta. -40 in winter isn't unprecedented for us, but we hit it for a week *every* winter now, and routinely hit 40 at least once in summer--and that had not happened in my lifetime until a few years back. The mediation between extremes is gone and it took spring and fall with it.

My rules very much allow for (and encourage for humorous effect) informalities such as these. ...but I still demand people follow my *inflexible rules* of informality. Eg., seeing "ya" instead of "yeah" makes me want to punch people in the head.

The funny thing (for me) is that I was at UWaterloo and it was 2008. UWaterloo was the engineering-focused feeder-school for Research in Motion, creators of Blackberry, and 2008 is when the house of cards fell. When I later learned that story, it made perfect sense.

Having TA-ed 1st-year English classes for the business and engineering faculties, I can confirm. Worse, most of them somehow put their English requirement off to 4th year and still struggled with the nerfed, junior-high-level, material. We were teaching them how to use commas, for Christ's sake.

Yes. Almost like the right is about enforcing power from above and remaining unaccountable to their voters while the left is (theoretically) about the power of the voter, whose vote itself *is* their power, but is reduced to nothing if the only choice they have is "terrible" and "not as terrible."

ChatGPT already has “Ph.D.-level intelligence,” in that once you remove it from its extremely narrow field of expertise (assembling words into credible-sounding passages) it is wildly out of its depth, but people vastly overestimate its authority because they don’t understand what “intelligence” is.

I'm most disturbed by the presumption that a PhD signifies intelligence. I was in Mensa briefly and the other members were imbeciles because they all believed they were too smart for school and thus never refined their intelligence with *education.* Every one was a conspiracy nutter as a result.

thing is there's actually good uses for it! Just one example: there are NGOs using AI to tabulate satellite data on elephant herds and this helps them ID and prevent poaching. There's another that is using similar sat data tabulation to track coral reef recession. The llm bros are cocking it all up
