BS on the last sentence Labour & libdems both ate their lunch. Even greens helped. Saying it was any one party other — other than the torries themselves — undermines the excellent first point I re Skype this for.

Man, working with Harvard undergrads is good but because they all published in middle school it’s too late for them to take the advice that if you have a common surname (Wang/Wu/Zhang etc), you should start publishing under surname-first order for citations.

Extremely frustrating to hear legal experts analyzing the SCOTUS ruling on immunity like just another case - it's an inherently normalizing act. People need to stop playing constitutional Calvinball and treat them like political actors.

Do you remember the story of Orson Wells radio airing of War of the Worlds and the panic it spawned?
Well, apparently it is a myth, generated by another, more real, panic, the one about the power of the radio, the then new mass media.

Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

This about India, not US, but a similar pattern of mainstream news outlets missing a major story about the country’s leader, partly due to state efforts at controlling the narrative and partly due to journalists unable to see their own “information bubbles.” Gift link www.nytimes.com/2024/07/04/w...

i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)

I thought he might do that 2 years ago, but TBH he or at least his administration have been doing a pretty good job even despite difficult times these last 4 years and I see why they don't want to rock the boat. But democracies don't just require governing they require campaigning.

And for those of us who have only known authoritarianism’s succour through supine legislatures, & a pliant judiciary, what SCOTUS decision enables in US is a familiar experience. The West talks of history’s lessons. We can speak to lived experience, negotiated daily, of absolute power’s violence.

SCOTUS rulings aren't as visceral as debate performances or even felony trials, so I suspect a lot of people are undercounting the impact of this last week. Democracy dies, not in darkness, but right there under the bright lights for everyone to see.

Yup. The Constitution includes a narrowly-defined legal immunity for members of Congress in a specific circumstance. Not one word about Presidential or Supreme Court Justice immunity. Those parts were made up out of thin air.
