Because falling crime rates aren't news. Plenty of research on this topic. I've taught a class entitled "crime and the media" addressing this issue for years. Your average person is not looking at the data.

That’s a matter of “objective”. The media isn’t objective in the neutrality sense of reporting facts. Second, most of the free news outlets are “right wing” as opposed to CNN which requires a paid subscription. So the “right” with a farther reach to influence public opinion (by omission) is intended

There's no real way to counter the misconception either. I remember one conversation (years ago) with a FB friend. She said the world was more dangerous. I showed her statistics that showed the opposite. Her retort: "well you're entitled to your opinion". 🙄

Creating a false narrative is easy and the media knows that. Not just that but "decreasing crime" is often a promise that politicians give and this just helps feed into it.

it has been a fairly consistant thing that crime is consistently falling, but the perception of crime increases, because 'if it bleeds it leads', and an incessant 24 hour news cycle now that must be filled. Plus the bootlickers of the police state need to worship their masters.

I like a lot of what's on this thread, but I also want to remind people that we don't have to be uncritical consumers of news. Or social media. Don't get me started on the Citizen app, etc. We have to interrogate if we're buying into certain narrative because they confirm our biases.

tbh, if there were a monetary penalty for propagating inaccurate news, basically a liar's fine, this would all be very different if, for example, they were charged $100,000 per minute of lies they air, they may change their tune sooner rather than later

I think the fact that crime spiked so dramatically has something to do with it to. There is a lag between effect and acknowledgement. Politicans are taking advantage but crime isn't like grocery pricees. It takes a long time for people to register that they are experiencing less crime.

Interesting choice of words, "failing". Commercial media has ONE motivation: Selling as many advertising slots as possible, as quickly as possible, at as high a price as possible, to as many advertisers as possible, in order to pursue perpetual growth on Wall Street. It's antisocial pathology.

So the thing that has to be considered here is, yes, media is failing BUT ALSO it is in the best interests of *local police* to make sure the public feels their budgets (typically the largest of a city/town) are warranted. So they send endless PR to local news, which needs content. Rinse wash repeat

a HUGE factor is that formal US media is not actually driving stories the way it used to. A lot of crime stories are bubbling up from social media, so people are seeing it reshared in their feeds and amplified by algorithms and assume that crime is everywhere and growing.
