I’ve been running a business for 10 years, employing 2-8 other people over that time. We started it February of the year the ACA went into effect. Couldn’t have gotten affordable private insurance otherwise, and wasn’t willing to go without.

Gender discrimination was legal. I don't just mean they could charge you twice as much if you needed maternity coverage. I mean they could straight-up charge you twice as much for the exact same coverage purely because you were a woman.

Oh my goodness, yes! I teach Medical Ethics, and one of the things I point out with the ACA is there are a few big things that get attention, but 80% of it was simply plugging TONS of painful holes scattered all over the system. It's far from perfect, but it's a massive improvement over what we had.

Anyone who says the ACA is bad/useless is someone who never had to experience being denied medical care because of a pre existing condition, like they were a used car.

I was uninsured for 9 years before ACA became a thing. I thank my lucky stars for it. Now that I'm older and still poor af (not for lack of trying to make more money), i have many health issues that would go untreated otherwise and my quality of life would be awful and I'd be unable to work.

I don't. And I'm afraid to ask. And also they will jack up the price of other female controlled birth control methods if not make them downright illegal.

My employer only allowed refills in 30-day increments. Birth control pills were sold in 28-day packs. That was a whole argument with HR on whether the company would cover them or if everyone on BC had to have a 2 day gap every month.

Remember how if were diagnosed with a condition, say MS, and had to switch plans for a job, then that condition became “pre-existing” and not the new health insurers responsibility. AKA no insurance for you for your catastrophic health needs. Not cool.

They don't because they were 5 when the ACA passed. Even of the people old enough to remember, half never used bc. It's the same with pre-existing condition or lifetime cap stuff.

ACA is the only reason I was willing to quit my job at Google & go do random freelancing. I feel it's underappreciated how much better the ACA is for small businesses & freelancers. Large companies have a huge advantage in being able to employ people whose fulltime job is "get employees healthcare".

Pre-ACA I got denied healthcare coverage for Gilbert Syndrome as a pre-existing condition which: A) I didn't know I had B) Has virtually no symptoms C) Requires no treatment D) May actually decrease your risk of hearth disease Can't be overstated just how bad the ghouls in insurance boardrooms were

The pre-existing condition crap where the insurance companies would deny tubal ligations because of prior yeast infections. It still sucks that teeth, eyes, and feet are luxury body parts, but it was way worse in the before times.

Also weird to see an enforced, penalty-driven, right wing sop to insurance corporations pushed by a neoliberal monster who refused a public option, presented as something other than that. And Biden could have ordered M4A under pandemic authority, the greatest no-brainer in history.

I think it was fine when it passed, but I think we can criticize something after 10 years no? The problem was insurance companies and the ACA did very little to rein them in: they just found other places to overcharge and make healthcare inaccessible.
