I doubt anyone reading this will care, but this has always struck me as a misunderstanding of how LLMs work and what they're actually good at. If you really wanted it to evaluate the count of letters in given text, you can do that by asking it to write itself code to do it accurately:

This issue is related to how it sees the prompt. The first layer tokenizes the input, so, if, for example, strawberry is one of the tokens, it doesn't see the characters at all, just the token, strawberry. So, no, don't put them in charge of anything life critical/threatening, but this isn't _why_
