I just want to beg people to tell me what happens when we completely give up on the electoral system.
Tell me what you imagine happening.
I want to be able to see it. Tell me how it doesn't involve things getting so much worse, millions dying, before there's any chance of something better.
I hate Joe Biden as much as anyone, but voting for him isn't about liking or even tolerating him
It's about stopping the other guy from carrying out the next Holocaust by any means necessary
I don't wanna either, but being part of a genocide is way worse, and we're closer to that than you think
to all the people saying that there is zero difference between the two sides, why would NYTimes, SCOTUS, and billionaires very clearly support one side? obviously there must be some difference
Whenever people tell me they wonât vote I ask them what happens when traffic lights go down. There is almost always an accident because most people donât follow the rules.
What if itâs a bad accident & you canât call for emergency care?
Some actively work to help & some ignore. Same as always.
That I can tell. Having the Portuguese Royal Family here, than military, than vote based on lands and the 10% litterate, than GetĂşlio Vargas coup (he's a mixed bag), a democratic breath, than the military coup, it goes all up in flames. Poverty grassing, native populations dying, inflation, all that
I donât think a lot of people get it. I didnât live through a violent uprising but my grandmother was in Panjab during the Partition & I have family that left Tanzania & Uganda during unrest. For yrs, thereâs been this shrug of âlesser of 2â but things donât change when we donât try, they get worse.
I mean, I'm not saying don't vote against Trump. But I'm of the sad belief that things are going to get worse _regardless_. The only thing people can do is build communities that look after themselves as best they can, with the assumption that the government is either going to be bad or unhelpful.
Just because i imagine it being worse does not mean i don't think millions of death can be stopped with engagement with electoral politics. It's better to treat burnout like burnout without denying the bleak risk we would face either way.
That's how history works. Millions had to die to defeat Nazi Germany in WW2. Millions had to die to defeat the USA in Korea and Vietnam. Power only yields to violence.
It's not going to be an armed confrontation against the military force of military and cops. They are going to hold whatever territory they hold (those who don't defect) and people are going to be non-cooperative whenever/wherever they aren't having a gun pointed at them.
The most practical thing you do can is call for the removal of Biden as a candidate to be replaced by someone else. The people who insisted a different candidate was impossible and we have to vote for biden to save democracy are, ironically, opposed to democracy.
Iâm so sorry. Many of us in Australia are looking on and seeing that America is an absolute mess. What happens in America deeply affects us. I hope something happens to change everything for you
SCOTUS has dealt two people Five of a Kind. Biden gets to play that hand first. But he won't.
Then the other guy will. Might not be this election, might not be for a decade, but some asshole will play Five of a Kind.
Four months to radically reform how the courts and country works with immunity
First and foremost: Iâm not going to advocate for OR against *anything* in this (multi-skeetâŚsorry) response. Just present the rationale for how it works, conceivably, as an ethosâŚto abandon the electoral system, as a regular voter.
Direct action
Organizinâ
Mutual aid
Undermininâ the government and other oppressive institutions
You can still vote if you want to but just do it with the understandinâ that electoralism ainât gonna save us
I hate capitalism. I hate Joe Biden.
But tell me how it's not me and my people that wind up completely fucked under a right-wing administration if we all choose to opt out.
Tell me what to do.
Thank you.
I don't need you to be Democrats, or to believe in regulated capitalism. I want your side and mine to have the opportunity to debate and yell at each other about it, in a peaceful context. I want my regulated-capitalism liberalism to be the American conservative position.
that's where we are
it's not like psychopaths give back the power they've stolen willingly
"the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants"
lots of people don't like this quote but seems appropriate
I could be wrong
That's already locked in, in large part because liberals insist on playing a rigged game. We have to defeat the evil empire and remake society. It's literally the only way
The way I see it it doesn't matter at this point. Biden winning again is a hail mary and millions will die under a Trump dictatorship even without revolution.
Most of the world lives like that. You stay out of politics, you keep your head down, you pursue happiness in your own little ways. Itâs not so bad until somebody decides you need liberating.
Any time I've asked the question, the response I get is "I want to watch it all burn down."
When I point out that we'll be the ones burning down with it, I usually get downvoted or blocked.
People don't know what they WANT, they just want something different & don't care how we get there.
Plenty of people have already given up on the electoral system. Close to half of the electorate. Are things happening as you suggest they do when people disengage? I'm asking sincerely, because I want to understand if I'm missing something about the deep significance of voting in this oligarchy.
The answer to this I have heard (and itâs not mine) is that those outcomes are inevitable and they at least want to go with a clear conscience. They think Biden has utterly failed to put up the walls required to stop it.
