Trouble is there's often no one to vote for at most levels (uncontested) and steep barriers are in place to keep people from running without the support of a party that doesn't seem to care about most local races. The DSA showed how easy it is to beat the GOP at those levels if you try.

Often times the republicans won those elections because dems, especially at state/ local levels in red areas, do not run competitive campaigns on popular policies; and because red states are all extremely gerrymandered and POC face extreme voter suppression. don't individualize it.

Just checked & voter turnout in my county for May 21 election was 16% (down from primary turnout in 2022 of 25%). This was a primary BUT ALSO included special election for city council seats in 2 diff cities AND final election for judges, including GA Supreme Court judges. Apathy is deadly.
