Years before this ruling, that was the defense trotted out by the Calm Down types: they didn’t do it! Too many people said no, I won’t commit crimes for you, Trump. They fail to realize there were multiple who were willing! If he’s reelected how many Jeff Clark’s do you wanna risk him appointing

#Metoo ruined lives: the women’s. For the summer issue of Bookforum, I wrote about Christine Blasey Ford’s memoir “One Way Back,” the aftermath of disclosure, and what it means to be a public survivor when storytelling has proven futile. www.bookforum.com/culture/disp...

Explosive reporting in Le Monde confirms what was apparent all week: Macron resisted the emergence of anti-far-right front after round 1. His PM, Attal, forced it as a fait accompli, & pressured for drop outs to block RN. Even then, Macron made some phone calls to undercut it.

The fact that only the president enjoys complete immunity, and that he also has the power of pardon is part of what is so terrifying about the ruling. It means that those beneath him are entirely at his good graces and arbitrary will. It's a power machine, not a check on his power.

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

Extremely frustrating to hear legal experts analyzing the SCOTUS ruling on immunity like just another case - it's an inherently normalizing act. People need to stop playing constitutional Calvinball and treat them like political actors.

If Biden can't campaign he should consider passing the torch, but the elite press (and especially the NYT) is desperately trying to will this into existence. And it's really gross. (2/2)

Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

Thread. It's always true that when you choose Presidents, you're choosing the advisors they will appoint. This is true even if they just turned 35 and run ultramarathons for fun while not winning Nobel Prizes in physics. It's just especially true now.

For about the millionth time, I’ll just say — having a public editor who could ask people how this happened and lay it out for readers would actually make the paper look better than fucking up this badly and then walking away from it without saying a word.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

And on this July 4th, keep in mind all those who are struggling for the right to self-determination today and those who have struggled in the past to guarantee your rights today. And get out there and vote! Happy 4th of July everyone! (8/8)

But the people who tell you not to vote, or take actions to make it harder for people to vote, do not want there to be a next time. So always, always vote for democracy first; most of the time this is a non-deciding issue but lately in the world it is. (7/)

Voting is often as much about harm reduction as it is about improving things. And the whole point of democracy is that if your viewpoint does not succeed this time, there's always next time. (6/)

...regardless of what the races are or if they don't seem to matter, because they very much do. Vote for the candidate you want, or vote in order to prevent the worst candidate from taking office; both are valid and important reasons to vote. (5/)

There are a LOT of people (that author included) who do not want other people to have that right, and it is an increasingly loud force in the world today. This is why it is so important to vote in any and all of your elections, up and down the ticket, regardless... (4/)

Let me just state how incredibly wrong this sentiment is, especially on today of all days. A day that, yes, is often seen about celebrating the US, but is more fundamentally about celebrating the right of self-determination, a right that can only be guaranteed by true and active democracy. (3/)

Hey folks, on this 4th of July, the New York Times chose to publish an opinion piece entitled "Why I Don't Vote. And Why Maybe You Shouldn't Either." The piece hides that the author has previously published material directly opposing democracy. (2/)

Banning medical debt from credit reports. Cracking down on junk fees. Banning non-competes. Capping credit card fees. Negotiating drug prices. Expanding OT pay. These Biden policies don't make headlines, but this is what it looks like when government works for the people.

Giving up hope is also complying with authoritarians in advance. It’s saying that fascism is inevitable, that there is no other way to be. I know it’s hard to keep hope alive, but I hope you find a way. ❤️
