it feels like the whiteness of big political media spaces right now is having a big effect on how people are thinking about the debate. eg I have seen relatively little discussion of trump's "black jobs" comment, which immediately exploded on black twitter

See this? I engaged with their whining about rich people not going to prison. (vis-a-vis Trump)
C'est moi. Je suis the sucker for engaging with this person.
Don't make the same mistake!

This is a good point and I do not know but you know what would be great? A plan that foresees these issues and addresses them

I don't view this is hope, just facts. People like what they are used to, have sunk costs into, have reaped benefits from& they don't like having that taken away. When these battles were fought before, benefits were theoretical. They aren't now. I dread the process but don't despair abt the outcome.

I cannot say. My sons are 23, 21, and 17 and I am sure have the same questions. Does it mean that we don't try to plant the tree?

But the flaws that facilitated it are pretty obvious&can be targeted&addressed w/time, otherwise we cannot leverage the experience to do better. I am a systems thinker w/3 draft-age sons. I am looking at the near-midrange future w/nausea&dread. But I can’t just throw up my hands, &I won’t.

I think there was a lot of complacency, like dusting off hands, all done. But the machinations from the other side were still going full tilt

They will feel it in reality bc they have been living with the benefits on several fronts&will feel the pain of their loss. No one is pretending anything here.

I just don’t underestimate the amount of self interest that has built up around some of these issues among even the most die-hard conservative electorate&how motivating that can be once they feel the pain themselves. It is tragic that anyone has to feel the pain, esp those who didn’t bring this on

Yes, it’s not going to be the work of a moment. But that’s why I mention sunk costs/reaped benefits. People have experienced these effects now, are invested. It’s not theoretical. So there may be a source of will of the people that has been overlooked that will emerge as the reality of losses hits.

Feel free to think that way and act or not act accordingly if you’d like.

Imagine going back in time and telling someone that the day this economic data dropped, most NYT columnists wanted the Democratic incumbent to step aside

We pack the court. We don’t sit around and hand wring about a bad debate performance against a convicted felon. We vote to have someone in the executive branch who makes appointments that forward our nation’s progress. We don’t give up. And it’s not instantaneous so we also have to accept that.

Same. Even Loving vs Virginia had just been decided. No ADA. No EPA. No protections against being fired for pregnancy. No no-fault divorce.

I mean, why not both? Just mostly fight, take a few whinge and cry breaks as needed. It is fucking demoralizing to see Good Things be taken away. Cry and whinge and mourn and then claw those mother fuckers back.

Not over. As someone alive before Chevron precedent, before legal abortion, before many things being flipped back in time existed, I can say you can fight this war&win it. Again. &this time, people have sunk costs&reaped benefits where before it was theoretical. They will feel&resent the loss.

I'm just saying: if all we ever do online is dissect the shitty actions of the 8 worst guys, and draw from this that humanity is terrible, and then use that conclusion to give up all hope for the world, & meanwhile a huge community of activists is desperate for our help... this is bad

I guess the sad thing about all this is the realization that not only is the media not a defense against fascism but with its current incentive structures in 2024 is actively helping to usher it in

The biggest disaster of the last 24 hours is actually the Supreme Court ruling that overturns 40 years of deference to the expertise of regulators in cases about pollution, drug safety, food safety, climate change — you name it, the Court just gelded it. Even if Biden is reelected, we're weakened.
