In light of Taylor Swift making crochet cool again, please, please, PLEASE remember this when searching for your own version of her crochet dress!!!!! Crochet can NOT be done by a machine. It HAS to be done by hand. If you find a $25 crocheted dress, someone was criminally underpaid to crochet it.

then if it were to mess up even one stitch in the pattern, that could mean having to take out all the stitches made after that stitch and redo them all. I am not sure if machine crochet will ever be cost effective, if we can even get it to work at all.

the motion of the hand in crochet is also quite complicated. machine crochet could be possible in theory, but would be a complicated machine to replicate hand movements achieving proper tension, as well as require very advanced computer vision to aim the hook properly.

in crochet, each following stitch is not lined up where it can easily be grabbed. In knitting, the stitches are all kept open on a needle, making it possible for a machine to knit. but in crochet u reach the needle into closed off stitches which isn't possible for a machine since they can't see

That last point is the biggest for me - I can imagine some elements (a granny cluster, for example) being easier to automate than others, because the space where the hook is inserted is bigger, more forgiving and holds multiple stitches... but why train a robot to do it when child labour is cheap?

Oh my god, this is fucking huge. It was huge when we developed a daily PrEP pill that could prevent you from catching HIV; this is a successful phase III trial of a PrEP shot that will only need to be given *twice a year*. Still needs a confirmatory Phase III, but holy fuck.
