When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

Please enjoy this small elephant hawkmoth 💖 To help moths like this, leave some weedy/unmown areas in your garden if you have one. Do less. Don't mow eeeeverywhere. Have a sit down. If anyone asks, tell them you're looking after your local flying kittens 🦋🐈 Thank u from the Moth Promotional Board

Excited to be taking my first CIEEM training, building CPD hours for my new career! Training is about UKHab - all about how to survey & classify habitats using this newer system that can be used for Biodiversity Net Gain planning. Loving the coding system - well structured for analysis!

Reminder that Aaron Swartz was facing 35 years in prison and financial devastation for trying to programmatically download and open the contents of JSTOR, which led to him taking his own life. But OpenAI is going to scrape all of academia and make billions by plagiarizing it.

If only we had detailed information telling us the climate is changing far faster than any time in human history... ...and if only we had an unambiguous physical explanation for why those changes have occurred... ...then some politicians would still deny any problem exists.

Was wonderful to see the Wilding documentary last night, plus fascinating discussion with Q&A!

Topics ranged from the green finance market to measuring baselines in the early days of rewilding (including fixed point photography!), pollinators, and #rewilding at all scales including gardens.

Times weren’t better back then. You were just in your carefree youth and are missing that time now. We tend to claim that music, fashion, TV, and society peaked when you were in your teens. It’s not the world it’s you that you are melancholic about.

#IDthought 6 At every general election, we are faced with a binary choice. With one cross, we are deemed to have signalled our agreement everything in a party’s manifesto and everything else – if it wins – it can ram through Parliament over the next five years. 🧵

Of all the things Darwin was right about, perhaps the most surprising is his answer to the age-old question: where do chickens come from? This is not the "chicken & egg" question, but how did the chicken, a bird famous for flying as well as a brick, circle the globe?

This is what happens when people view statistics as a hoop to jump through for publication rather than our best defense against accidentally publishing stupid shit because we humans are extraordinary detecting patterns and constructing explanations — even when none exist.
