Thinking about becoming a Lost Causer, but for Reconstruction. Flying an 1876 flag, slipping “40 acres & a mule” into casual conversation, saying “our people fought the good fight” about ten+ years of multiracial governing. www.rareflags.com/RareFlags_Sh...
I am for seizing all ancestral confederate lands and wealth to fulfill the 40 acres and a mule promise.
And mules are better for the environment than cybertrucks, and smarter than AI.
"Then come along, come along, make no delay;
Come from every nation, come from every way.
Our lands, they are broad enough - don't be alarmed,
For Uncle Sam is rich enough to give us all a farm."
When at least I was taught American History, do not remember being taught how pivotal that post-election deal was. A different US with a President Tilden?
This fits into my one of my strongly-held beliefs, which is that circular star formations look good on the flag. Just another reason to add a 51st state (or 52nd or 53rd)
Still think it's ridiculously cool that Spike Lee's production company is called 40 Acres & A Mule (certainly seeing that title card is how I was introduced to the concept)
I have a rant similar to this but from the point of view that the sabotage of reconstruction is what fucked the south and doomed it to the poverty it’s only just now recovering from. 40 acres and a mule would have solved a lot of problems, in addition to recompensing the former slaves.
So, I felt compelled to make this: here's a vector version of this flag (minimally adjusted for flat printing). It's licensed CC:BY-SA, so you can put it on anything you want. Have at it :) roricomics.itch.io/38-star-us-f...
(it will give a suggested price, but just enter 0.00 for gratis)
Bit of a tengent but...
Can anyone recommend good wrtiers/historians on Reconstruction?
One of the great might-have-beens of US history, and I feel sadly uneducated about it.
Thanks all
My Reconstruction memento. The person who signed it was about involved as one can get (along with the events that preceded Reconstruction). 👇 bsky.app/profile/poly...
It's the stain of the original sin unresolved, they started then went, ahh we didn't like slavery but racism is still fine right y'all? Let's just you know sweep it under the rug so we can get back to business as usual exploiting most of the populous
Shoulda hung every Confederate officer above the rank of major, any Confederate federal politician or state official, and anyone who owned slaves.
Plantation assets split to give former slaves an economic base.
It would be fun to have an alt history novel in which the compromise of 1877 didn't happen and multiracial democracy was an established thing by the end of the 19th century.
this piece makes me bummed that alt text can’t/doesnt/ isn’t allowed to go into this level of detail.
i would actually love descriptions like this for mundane items like spatulas.
Fuck it why not. Start tracing the lineage of every former confederate office holder and plantation owner and if they have any semblance of power start hounding them
My hot take about the Reconstruction era is: it shouldve never ended.
They should have a confederate flag on the floor of the voting booth in every state and you have to tread all over it before you can vote.
There should also be an oath that says "black people are my equal". Cant say it:no vote
