When it was revealed that Justice Abe Fortas received $15,000 for teaching a seminar at American University, conservatives howled so much that they blocked his elevation to chief justice and then forced his resignation.
1. The corruption claims weren't the primary reason but it was easier than just saying they hated the Warren Court.
2. Many justices guest-lecture, often abroad. The issue with the AU salary was that it was paid by Arnold, (Fortas) & Porter clients with interests before the Court, not by AU.
He joins a faculty that includes Erin Hawley, wife of Senator Hawley, who worked to overturn Dobbs and clerked for CJ Roberts. The social incest in this crowd is, um, something.
One of my favorite religious studies professor's wife was bullied out of faculty at Regent University, and eventually fired, for not supporting Trump. (They're both in better jobs now, this was before I met them.)
I think of that whenever I think of that school, and now they've done this.
Fortas resigned because he was receiving a lifetime retainer and providing legal advice to a convicted felon while a sitting justice. Why do you think he resigned for teaching at AU?
Durbin: "This is part of a troubling pattern of corruption, so the Senate Judiciary Committee has sent a cordial letter to Justice Alito inviting him to explain what happened, at his earliest convenience. Of course, if he refuses to explain, that's quite alright. We don't want to cause a fuss."
The conservatives are the biggest hypocrites. This is true when it comes to governing, voting rights, the rule of law, the practice of their religion, and the value of life among other things. They are the greatest threat to country.
And he actually did the job!
