Among these, I always get stuck on the Senate filibuster. It did not exist in any form while the Framers were alive. The current form, in which a Senator can stop a bill permanently without doing anything, did not exist until the 1970s. But it's treated as sacrosanct.

My problem with #TheAcolyte isn’t that it’s about boring Jedi Space Cops (tho it is).

It’s that it’s about *incompetent* Jedi Space Cops.

Not one of these idiots is using the Force to sense intention or figure out which twin is which in a known “we have twins” scenario—both basic Jedi skills.

Well, we had a good run, but it's time to pack it in. No nation should survive such an abomination in the sight of the gods and man. (this joking tone would be more fun in a different year, when the prospect of America "packing it in" is not that far-fetched)

Still marveling at Gorsuch's Ohio v. EPA opinion, in which he confused nitrogen oxide (a pollutant) with nitrous oxide (laughing gas). He did this five times, never once getting it right—in an opinion overruling the EPA's own expert scientific analysis! s3.documentcloud.org/documents/24...

Cannon is a whack job, but considering the SCOTUS ruling it’s pretty reasonable to request briefing on this. The real issue here is that the SCOTUS ruling is insane.

They’re *all* “it’ll be fine, we’ll work on some bipartisan bills together” Institutionalists entirely insufficient for the last… 12 years? Certainly for the last 8 years. As someone born and raised in Illinois, Durbin is a real “live long enough to see yourself become a villain” guy for me.

This drives me up the wall, but it’s exactly the answer Biden would have given in 2020, 2012, 2000, 1988… it’s the answer of an Institutionalist with an unshakable faith in The System. His answer shows he’s was the wrong candidate 6+ months ago for political reasons, not now for age/health reasons.

Crazy-making shit.

Right-wing legal talking heads are focusing on arguing that it is RIDICULOUS to say that a second-term Trump will be empowered by immunity to do horrific things, while carefully preparing to argue in seven months that it is RIGHT that Trump do horrific things which aren’t actually horrific anyway.

i don't know whether AOCs call for impeaching the justices will be the right one (it doesn't have a chance in hell of getting through), but the conversation has to start with congress, who are prime offenders in letting the court get to this point, and i'm encouraged someone there recognizes that

I'll point out that Napoleon staged the military outside of the General Assembly at one point and prevented political opponents from entering in order to pass legislation. Under the SCOTUS ruling, it seems like a president could do the same and be immune due to being the C-in-C.

So based on decisions from just this week, the President, as long has he has the gloss of officialdom, can basically do anything without legal restraint, whereas the President, acting via duly appointed agencies authorized by Congress, is more restrained than ever? What a coherent jurisprudence!

This is of course glib. In the current moment, and in the case at hand, the liberal coalition is not fighting for any policy end but for the rule of law itself. See: elections. If Trump loses this fall, he will try to overturn it (again.) Biden won’t, because he believes in democracy.

The president is himself forever immune from prosecution for crimes committed using his official power, and he can pardon anyone for helping him to commit federal crimes, explicitly including an actions in furtherance of a coup to illegally hold onto the office of the presidency. That’s the upshot.
