Relatedly, please remember that a federal appeals court recently ruled that cops can compell you to use biometrics to unlock your phone. Passwords, pins, or patterns, people.

What an incredible life. “The Panthers’ defense was run by the New York Law Commune, a radical legal office of which Mr. Stolar was a member…Mr. Stolar helped defend the Camden 28, a group of mostly Roman Catholic war resisters who in 1971 broke into a draft-board office to destroy records.”

When the american liberals use France's election as an illustration of the need to VOTE, they ignore that people were not only voting against the far right but *for* something. They voted for a campaign which promises to: increase minimum wage, lower retirement age, pay for all childcare, etc

What this article leaves out is that if you hand your unlocked phone to a police officer, they can legally search it. Unless companies develop a method that allows you to show officers insurance cards and driver license without unlocking the rest of your phone, don't.

If you steal $1000, you can be sent to prison. When health insurance companies steal $50,000,000,000, they get tax breaks, subsidies and government contracts, while the people they steal from die or go into debt. But keep blaming immigrants and poor people for rising crime.

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

NFT’s, crypto, and “AI” are all the same thing. In an economy that doesn’t produce anything anymore, all that’s left is financialization and shifting numbers around on a spreadsheet, an infinite death drive to wring out the sponge as the ship is sinking.

The absolutely wild thing is: This goes for ALL social aid. Just *giving people some fucking money,* literally going "OK, how much did you need?", cutting checks, and waving them out the door? COSTS LESS and HAS BETTER OUTCOMES than the current system's bureaucracy and means testing, EVERY TIME.

At some point people are going to realize that well-spoken likeable (to other white men) white men are not necessarily intelligent or capable; they just remind the person in power (who is invariably a white man) of themselves.

This is an excellent description of the editorial failure behind The NY Times' decision to run Alina Chan's lab leak article. What's the value proposition to the readership of presenting a one-sided argument that most scientists find lacking? Did no editor bother to ask that question?

Apart from everything else, the idea of art specifically tailored "for your tastes" makes no sense because the way you develop tastes is by encountering art and having a reaction to it.

When I started at UNC in 1990, the university was ranked in the top twenty of *all* colleges nationally. And if I’m remembering correctly the in-state tuition was just $500 a semester. It was just an incalculably valuable public good, which is why the NC GOP made it their mission to destroy it.

Libraries are one of the most radical social institutions we have, because they’re based on the idea that *everyone* has the right to information, for free. It’s also what makes them crucial to democracy. I will never stop yelling about this!

🧵 As a former librarian, I'll add: Rich (& middle class) ppl also close libraries bc they can't conceive of the need, aka a failure of empathy. I was *constantly* asked: 1) People still go to libraries? (yes) 2) Isn't everything digitized now? (wow, no, let's examine just how how wrong that is)

the moment at which I found mysef writing the phrase "legally killed child" I would at a minimum ask the editor to spike the story instead of having my name attached to it forever, and then I'd go take a long walk and contemplate every poor choice of mine that had led me to this point.

But this article’s claim that it was caused by the 2023 strikes is bullshit
