The bottom line is that the left wing is not failing because the people doing the work are stupid or corrupt, but because there aren't enough people doing the work and they don't have enough resources.

One reason this bothers me is that, if you're not actively involved yourself, you have little grasp of why things are done the way they are. E.g., people often snipe at activists for not doing things they've actually tried, which didn't work and that's why you've never heard about them.

Pretty tired at this point of hearing from people who will find fault with every tactic anyone tries for fighting back politically (any protest is misjudged somehow, while all electoral strategies are deluded or corrupt) but you never, ever hear the person mention having done anything themselves.

i think it's really important that everyone understands that you, shitposter, reading this now: you have a much better understanding of what happens to people who do favors for donald trump than at least six elite-educated supreme court justices, and probably all nine of them.

this is where dems not having the same kind of billionaire donor class with money to burn really hurts us, and i think there's a deeply unpleasant conversation to be had with, say, marc cuban about what he wants in exchange for signing a large check addressed to the "fuck john roberts society"

I mean, if Sotomayor's opinion is that a president can legally order the assassination of his opponents, doesn't that imply that he can order the assassination of any one of us?

Does this mean it might be legal for Trump to order soldiers to kill immigrants or protesters? Is there a means of stopping him, other than the military not obeying those orders? I'm finding it hard to follow the legal logic of any of this.

My first read: If a president commits crimes unrelated to him being the most powerful person in the world, he can be prosecuted. But if explicitly uses his powers to commit crimes, he is at least presumptively, and probably absolutely immune from prosecution. I mean, holy shit.

I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.

I had drinks with an editor in corporate publishing after her first compulsory "Let AI write your emails!" training. She was like, "Can't I just … write emails?" Nine months later, I asked if her team ever used AI, and she said no one's found any use for it at all, but the trainings will not stop.

I think it varies by person. In my experience, a lot of activists are doing a few different things at once, and finding all of them frustrating.

I think often people protest because it's the only thing they can do, not because it's a useful thing to do. But it's also always hard to tell if protest is working. It may be part of the reason there are headlines. No real way to be sure.

We need a system where, when someone criticises a protest for being done the wrong way, they're asked how the protest should have been done, and when they answer, they're automatically signed up for weekly email reminders to participate in just such a protest
